I wonder if they will offer, and like Macha with Milwaukee - will not accept right away??

Could be - - don't they all have a gag order until after the Series?

Pinella would be an improvement in that his record doesn't show the case of Veteranosis that Hal McRae had. Pinella has given SOME young players good opportunities, although I wouldn't exactly call that his strength as a manager.
I've got a real wait and see attitude toward Lou if he takes the Rays job. He's the only name manager who would want it, and he does have the strong ego necessary to succeed in Tampa Bay. Subjectively, I've never liked Pinella as a manager, but that may be due to my first impression of him, when he managed the Yanks in the 1980s. Obviously he's grown since then, and has accomplished a lot as a manager, although I believe he's seriously overrated. I hope the Rays get him, in that he may be the only manager who can succeed in that place at this time, due to his persona and his roots in Tampa. |

If Lou takes the job I think he'll do fine with the young players. He'll assemble a good coaching staff and help get this team going. They're not that far away. It's just a matter of incubation.
He'll be close to home, which will invigorate him. The Mets sounds like too much of a headache what with Phillips freaking out everytime there's a crisis and making dumb moves. Lamarr will probably leave him alone and let him work,no pressure. I hope he takes the gig. |

If Piniella takes this job, I only hope for his and the Rays' sake that the front office lets him have a voice and listens to his ideas on how to build the team. He has a good track record and a good reputation, but the way the Rays have been run - a rudderless ship, changing "strategy" every season it seems - that's not a team that the most legendary manager could go anywhere with. They need to, hopefully with Piniella's input, pick an approach and stick with it for several years.

You know... the very best part of Lou P. in Tampa B. is that the rest of the world will get to see again what Piniella is like when he has a crummy team. He's a joy to watch.
This "Lou coaching 100 win teams" thing was beginning to grate on me. I mean... championships, world series.. yada, yada, yada... I want to see volcanic Lou return. I miss hat kicks and umpire bumps and dirt explosions.... Welcome back, Lou. Pick Tampa. |

He's getting old now ... has to pick his moments. But oh my goodness, he still has moments. If he goes to Tampa Bay, they'll need a new coach by the AS game.

They said on ESPN that the Commissioner's Office told the D'Rays to delay the announcement until next week so not to detract from the WS. I don't think it would but it is not a big deal.
I think Lou is making a terrible decision. I know he wants to be closer to home but the D'Rays could send him to an early grave.

The Devil Rays look like they are giving up a lot for a manager that only has one year left on his contract. I guess the Devil Rays need to do something bold to try to make it a viable franchise.
Who's idea was it to put baseball in Florida? Nice decision. |

He has to help. The Rays can't possibly get any worse.
