Is it just me, or did Troy Percival sound incredibly stupid last night?
All he kept saying was that his goal was to get Aurilia and Kent out, so that he could groove one to bonds and "see how far he could hit it." after all, he said, he had a 2-run lead, so the HR wouldn't matter. i know that he might have been a little embarrassed about giving up the home run that never landed, but if he really meant it then that's ridiculous. sure, it's always exciting to see bonds hit one, but i doubt spit and tort-angel were excited to see that HR make it a 1-run game... |

Is Percival known for his "sense of humor" ????

I didn't see the interview that you are referring to, but I really hope the remarks were meant to be funny. If not, I would not pitch him again in the WS.

it's just you.
it was a 97-mph fastball. it was probably as good a pitch as he could throw. |

I hope he really didn't mean that. Maybe he was joking to make up for giving up that monster shot.

but if you saw the interview after the game, he did *not* seem to be JOKING. embarrassed and compensating, maybe, but joking -- no. |

"Awestruck" may be the appropriate term. No telling what someone might say under those circumstances.

I didn't see the interview. IF he was serious, and I'm managing the Angels, he doesn't pitch again this series. |

I would bet money he was simply being ironic.

Hasn't there been controversy over whether or not you should walk Bonds or pitch to him?
Bonds has gotten to the level where opposing players just marvel at the things he does, sorta like Jordan or Lemieux. It seems that opposing players just laugh or shake their heads in awe whenever he hits another one. Most macho power pitchers ultimately want to test their mettle against the best hitters. Percival has no finesse about him whatsoever, his MO is "Here, try to hit this." It must be a shock when you're Troy Percival and Bonds just flicks the bat out and hits your best pitch 500 feet. Really, what other choice did he have? You could understand if Kevin Appier, even with a 5-0 lead, didn't think he could get Bonds out. But Percival at least has to try to throw strikes in that situation. Bonds not only has a great eye but he gets a superstar strike zone. |

I did not see the interview nor do I know Percival but he's a guy who throws 97 and plays baseball. I think he's just trying to run for cover after giving up a titanic blast. To think otherwise means he's just plain stupid. Why let someone jack one off you early in the series? Do you want him to feel even more confidence against you later in the series? Uh, I would not. I'd want to sit him down so that next time he remembers. From these scraps I think Percival is too dumb to knowingly be ironic.

the implication was that because it was a 2-run lead with 2 outs and no one on, it was OKAY to groove one. THAT'S stupid. |

Moose, I think you may be reading too much into this. Look at Washburn's reaction after Bonds' bomb off of him. He kinded smiled and shook his head as if to say "wow he is that good" Maybe this was Percival's way of saying that too. |

yeah. for any normal hitter, a 97-mph fastball is not a "grooved" pitch no matter where it is.
