Below are player nicknames derived from real place-names. You name the player. I think some of these will be very easy and a couple might be pretty hard.
This trivia question is sponsored by my web site: http://www.hallowedground.org Baseball's Historical Places A guided tour of memorials to the game's immortals and those sacred sites of our National Pastime's celebrated moments. Without further ado: Memphis Bill The Hoosier Thunderbolt The Binger Banger The Knight of Kennett Square The Kentucky Colonel Gettysburg Eddie Ozark Ike The Staten Island Scot The Goshen Schoolmaster The Duke of Tralee Wabash George Germany Enjoy! --David Burkett |

OK, maybe these aren't as difficult as I had hoped.
I'd never heard the Leever or Pennock nicknames until recently. I'll try to keep in mind the depth of the water here from now on. --Dave B. |

The only remaining unanswered name among the originals was "Germany" who was, of course, Herman Schaefer.
Here's a few more (I'm not even going to bother making them a quiz anymore so, please, no wagering): Arky Vaughan Wahoo Sam Crawford Vinegar Bend Mizell Nolan "The Alvin Express" Ryan Clyde "Pea Ridge" Day "Parisian Bob" Carruthers Henry "The Count of Luxembourg" Meine Pepper "The Wild Horse of the Osage" Martin Klondike Douglas Ron "Louisiana Lightning" Guidry and Too many Dixies and Texes to list. There's also more than one Frenchy, Dutch, Swede, Irish, etc. but those seem more about ancestry than an actual place-name. Of course, there's also Kenesaw Mountain Landis, but that's not technically a nickname. I'm still looking into "Orlando" Cepeda. --"Chicago Dave" |
