Default 379

Maybe the most significant single-season record around, as far as offensive impact, is the much-unheralded "times-on-base" record.

In 1923, Babe Ruth got on base 379 times. Only three players have been on base more than 350 times in a season (The Babe did it twice, along with Sliding Billy Hamilton and Ted Williams).

Barry has a chance this year.

The more I think about it, the more significant this record seems: you have to have a high OBA, which is the single most important offensive indicator, plus you have to be in the lineup every day.

Who are you? Ford Frick?

Bonds has played in 135 games this year, according to ESPN.

Barry has no shot at 379 or 380 times on base this season; I meant he has a shot at 350, which would put him in pretty elite company. Er, I mean *350.

Being on base 350+ times is a monster season as indicated by how rarely it has been done.

What is "times on base"? I assume hits + walks + HBP, but do errors and fielders choices count? Even if they dont, I think Bonds is better than 50-50 to get to 350 this year.

I'd never really paid any attention to this stat before.

Another record I'd consider unapproachable is the 623 bases that Ruth accumulated in 1921 (that is: times-on-base + extra bases on hits + stolen bases).

That year, Ruth was on base 353 times, which is the 3rd most ever, and had 253 extra bases on hits and 17 stolen bases. His 457 total bases on hits that season is still the record.

Times on base is the number of times that a batter has reached base safely by any possible means.

Errors and FC don't count.

As far as I know, no one keeps track of that.

Ruth had 205 hits, 170 walks, 4 HBP in 1923.
