Question Pierzynski -- Jackass or Misunderstood?

Have you been following the "feud" with Koch and Pierzynski?

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...8/SP145238.DTL

Quote:
The sting quotient increased a bit, Koch said, because the mouthy Pierzynski hadn't endeared himself to the A's during the series. "He's a jackass," Koch said. "Hopefully, Anaheim kicks the (tar) out of them."

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...1/SP124984.DTL

Quote:
"I saw what he said and I don't know why he'd say it," said Pierzynski, who hit a two-run homer off Koch in the ninth inning of the Twins' 5-4 victory in Game 5 in Oakland on Sunday. "I've never talked to him in my life."

Several A's players thought that Pierzynski was trash-talking during the series, and several were unhappy when he stood on home plate while Eric Chavez was trying to score in Game 1, something for which Pierzynski said he later apologized. He also said that opponents often believe he's trash-talking when in fact he's talking to himself.

"Randy Moss and I are so misunderstood," Pierzynski joked.

The Randy Moss comment was funny to me!

I don't know Pierzynski too well -- he always seemed like a nice guy to me...Gardenhire's response to Koch was pretty strong for such a mild-mannered guy...

Is it just Koch's/A's sour grapes or is this guy not well liked? Is he a big trash talker or is he just trying to distact the batters or both? What's your take?

All I can say Luna, is that if you suggest we add Pierzynski to the Lewinsky/Kaczinsky limerick thread, I will renounce my membership here immediately. ... I need to go recharge my speller.

Pierzynski's a guy you hate, unless he's on your team. He's supposedly quite annoying behind the dish.

I don't like trash talking, whatever the sport, but it seems to be a permanent part of today's environment

When you lose the best thing to do is walk away silently and lick your wounds.

Forgive me for being a Rome listener (not necessarily a "clone") but one of the best sayings he has is "Scoreboard." That's the only thing that matters and whether someone trash talks or not, if you are winning all you need to do is point to the scoreboard and say that's your trash talking. As for Koch, "Scoreboard", he lost and anything more is just whining. Don't get me started on a rant about (insert Kings and Steelers here) "I still feel we were the best team..." blah, blah, blah. No one remembers who lost.

I suppose, but that's the sort of thinking that would have embraced Tonya Harding if only she'd succeeded, the same sort of thinking that says it's not cheating if you don't get caught, and the same sort of thinking that says I tried it but I didn't inhale

For a more civilized take on sports listen to Tony Kornheiser - we get both in our area and it's no contest - class (TK) vs crass (JR)

I heard some sound bites from AJ from this year's ASG, and, I thought he was a hoot.

Sounds like he has fun while he plays the game.

No, but the language used has gotten a lot rougher over the years in all of society. When I was a teenager saying something "sucks" would have gotten most kids mouths washed out with soap. Now it's printed on t-shirts.

In 1969 Buck Owens wrote a song titled "I Wouldn't Live In New York City (If They Gave Me The Whole Danged Town)" - I shudder to say what they would substitute for "danged" these days.

right, but the language of 1969 was different from the language of 1939.

The language has changed, but i don't think the behavior is anything new.

I disagree profoundly. Civility has declined greatly in the years since 1965.

I agree, PW, and the coarsening of society has gained momentum in the past 15 years.
