You're not going to hit the lottery, and I'm as good as I'm going to get. Is this the same Hank Blalock who looked, coming into this year, like he may be the next Mike Schmidt? Who if, given a chance to play, is a can't miss? For Corey Patterson? I'd make the deal if they demanded that I take Everett, Gonzalez, AND Rocker. |

Alou/Patterson for Blalock/Everett is fine if you believe that Blalock is really going to make. Just tell Everett to not bother reporting.
As for Gonzalez, you must be kidding. The guy has spent his career on the DL and if he stayed healthy Gonzo and Sosa in the outfield sounds pretty ugly. Particlarly if you unload Patterson.

You want to talk about fun? Imagine watching a Gonzalez/Everett/Sosa outfield in Colorado.
Watch Larry Walker Leg out inside the park shots... Watch Juan Pierre get kicked out of the game because he rounded the bases twice on a grounder in the gap, and wanted credit for 2 runs... Seriously though... What's happened to Blalock that made him go from "World's Best Prospect" to "Insulted you would consider his future even as bright as Patterson?" |

or it could be Alou/Patterson for Juan/Blalock, in which case it would be a trade of potential superstar + oft-injured OF

I haven't seen Blalock play - I HAVE seen Patterson.
I'd rather have a CF than a 3B. And the Cubs have an awful track record with overhyped third basemen. |

I'm sorry, I must have missed the boat on Blalock. Someone fill me in on why he's a hot prospect.
His AAA stats make him look like the next Placido Polanco or something. Now, I like Placido Polanco as a super-utility infielder (Mark McLemore, Craig Counsell type) but he's not someone to build around. The guy hit .307 with 8 homers in 387 at-bats at Oklahoma. Worse yet, he didn't walk much, and as everyone knows, if you don't walk a lot, you're not worth squat, because even if you hit .290 and make the All-Star team or hit 39 homers, you're just going to fall apart when pitchers stop pitching to you. Blalock was far from the best hitter on his team, the best was probably Todd Greene (.325, .585 slugging). |

And while I certainly think Blalock can be a solid player, he's been passed like a Ferrari around a Yugo by Mark Teixeira. Buck is evidently all but giving the starting 3B job to "Tesh".

If I'm the Rangers, I send Gonzo, Everett and Blalock for Bobby Hill, Juan Cruz, Corey Patterson and Jon Lieber instead. Send huge chunks of payroll to the Tribune Co. and load up on potential fixtures at CF, 2B and SP. Definately try to get Cruz thrown in on the deal.

I think the cubs would need a PTBNL for Sosa to be thrown in.
