The Marlins are going to "increase" payroll next year. Hmmm...so why the trades LAST year that seemed to decimate the heart of the team. I dunno....perhaps since Loria can't get a profit by contracting, he may actually want to compete. |

I don't think I'd be snapping up those season tix yet if I lived in Miami yet. I'll believe that when I see it......

Is it any wonder Florida is still a football state?

I think this means that the social security tax increase finally kicked in.
I truly feel sorry for the Marlin fans (except for the 1997 debacle.) |

I buy it, actually.
Pretty much without question. Jeff Loria will increase payroll. |

He did it in Montreal.
Whether he spent it on reasonable items (Irabu, Lloyd) is certainly in question, but he did raise payroll. |

well, if i go a week in a coma and then am revived, it's probably safe to say that my "mobility will increase this week." It's not necessarily saying anything.

Oh, I'm not saying Loria is a good owner.
BUT, He is raising payroll. As far as questioning the trades of Dempster and Floyd, there are plenty of reasons why cutting bait on Dempster may have been a good idea, and Floyd as well. Whether they got anything resembling reasonable value for them, is another question. You know, with the pieces they have in place, they won't be that bad next year at all, Loria be damned. I'm not sure how revenue sharing will effect the Miami Marlins next year, but it'll take a lot of incoming revenue that they're not getting right now to get up to 50-55 million. Remember, the Marlins get no parking fees, no concession fees, and pay rent on Pro Player. I can't see a lot of money coming from their broadcast package, and you don't see a lot of Marlins gear on the streets. This is one of the teams that I honestly believe is running in the red, losing money like water through a strainer. So, the decision to raise payroll is significant. Does it mean Loria is a good owner? No. Does it mean that he's trying to be better? Probably. |

Although my contact with real Marlins' fans is pretty sparse (one cousin in Miami)... it sure sounds like they feel like they've been burned twice.
Loria has to do something to win back the confidence of the fan base there or they're going to continue to draw like an AA club. |

I read this as "we will TRY to look like we are increasing payroll". The Marlins have several guys headed into their 4th or 5th year arbitration cases (Castillo, Lee, Burnett, Penny, Looper, Nunez) and a few key players who are signed only thru `03 (Lowell, Millar).
Loria will likely lock up Burnett long term (say 4 years, $30 mil?) as well as Castillo (4 years, $36 mil?). He'll make token offers to Penny and Lee - expecting them to be rejected. He'll then trade them for prospects or cheaper veterans. Looper will go to arbitration and get a healthy raise - so will Nunez. Loria will make a lot of noise of about "starting negotiations with Lowell" in the press - but it will be for show. He may sign sometime in the middle of the season - IF the Marlins are in contention, if not, Lowell will be traded at the deadline. Technically, Loria WILL increase the payroll. But the Marlins will not return near the level of talent they HAD before he got there. |

So, wait, who are the 2002 equivalents of Irabu and Lloyd? Maybe Loria will trade for Chan Ho Park and Jay Witasick.
