Who is this Macha fellow and why is he the next latest and greatest managerial prospect? Is it just because he works for the A's or is there something more?
In a related note, what exactly makes a managerial prospect? |

Kenny Macha...third baseman/backup infielder from the 1970-80s, been floating around the minor league managerial ranks, posting some good records, now the A's bench coach. Supposedly a good mind for strategy, and deals well with the modern player.
I guess that's a description of a managerial prospect. |

What does he have that Ron Wotus doesn't have?

Macha is 51 years old. This is somewhat old for a rookie manager; most rookie managers are under 50.
BTW, Wotus is only 41, so he's more likely to get a shot at the big job, although Macha's stock will never be higher than it is at the present moment. If Macha isn't hired to manage this year, and the A's don't make the postseason next year, it becomes less likely he will ever manage in the majors, except in an interim role. This is his big chance for a REAL opportunity. Macha is the new Bobby Wine. Wine was once considered a top managerial prospect, but he was passed over and passed over, until he was no longer considered a prospect. After his stock had gone down to the point where he was considered to have no chance at managing, he replaced Eddie Haas on an interim basis for the 1985 Braves. Wine went 16-25, and the Braves hired Chuck(les) Tanner for 1986. He never got another shot; I don't even think he got another interview. It's now or never for Macha. |

Macha as a manager prospect is a bit liek macha as a player prospect. He was a pertty good line drive hitter with the Bucs system in the 70 's but he was hurt by a few things:
1. HE was a thrid baseman /first baseman who caught a little. he hit well enough to play third but really could not handle the position. as a first baseman his glave was find but lacked the power that you expect. 2. the bucs were a very good system at that point and was churning out young players at a great rate. macha got lost in the shuffle. 3. he wnet to the expos at kind if the same point in their history. lots of good young players, so no real chance for a guy like macha. he was an ok bench player for the expos and he was a member of their bench that was known as the BUS squad. ( broke underrated superstars.) im not saying he was a star. im not even sure if he could have been a regular. but he could of hit .270 with 10-15 home runs and drawn 50 or 60 walks. |
