I was watching Game 6 of the 1985 NLCS on Monday night on ESPN Classic and was wondering whether Orel is a HOFer. What do you think? I hated the Dodgers but got to thinking that maybe so. He had quite a run in the 80's but he only won 20 once (plus19-3 in 1985). However, that scoreless streak is astounding. I say almost but no.

what a shame it was when his arm blew out. damn was he a good pitcher for a few years. IMO he single handledly dragged the dodgers to a championship.
he might make the poorme HOF, but won't make the one in Cooperstown. |

Nope. Always good to see a fan advocating the enshrinement of a favourite but Orel's case is flimsy in the extreme.
Barely 200 wins, one Cy Young does not a HOFer maketh.

He'd be crowbar-able if he was inducted.

Orel was the only Dodger of the past thirty years I recall actually liking and rooting for. But he's not a HOFer.

Orel was a nice guy and had one really great year. Not even close, though, to a Hall of Fame career.

I like Orel, and the fact he's recognizable helps too.
You CAN make a case for him, but even in my expanded scope of the Hall, he's not in right now at the moment. |

You CAN make a case for Orel! That needs to be said. Orel's case is dependent on two things: 1. Peak value (needs no explaining). 2. Tough luck. In 1987 and 1989 Orel's ERA was WAY, WAY below league (3rd in the NL in '87, 2nd in '89), yet he was .500 both years. This indicates that Orel pitched in extended tough luck in two years where, with normal luck, he may have won 18-20 games. Orel would not be the worst pitcher in the HOF. Not by a longshot. But there is NO WAY that Orel will EVER be 1st or 2nd or 3rd in line for the HOF for pitchers. As soon as John, Kaat, and Blyleven go in, there will be other's to take their place. I personally rate Ron Guidry ahead of Orel. Cuellar and McNally had better ERAs vs. league, and, of course, won 20 games far more often. So you CAN make a case for Orel. It won't be good enough, though, unless we can resurrect Frankie Frisch, put him back on the Vets Committee, and airbrush a Gas House Gang-era Cards uniform on all pictures of Orel. ![]() |

If he goes in, folks will start yapping about Frank Viola.

Or David Cone. Or Dwight Gooden.

Hey, I'd put in Cone right now, and I'm on the right side of the fence with Gooden. Viola can't even make the fence IMO.
But that's just what I feel. |

While putting Orel in might feel good since he had that great year, and seems to be a likeable guy, he is not a hall of famer.
