**--hit 2 yesterday
*--hit 1 yesterday

6) The Pirates clinched a losing season for the 9th consecutive year. The 9 consecutive losing seasons ties the team record, originally set from 1949-57.

7) Barry Bonds watch--hit #56, is on pace for 69

Bonds hit #550 and is 13 behind Reggie Jackson for 7th place

8) Phillies P Jose Mesa was suspended for 2 games, for throwing at Cardinals CF Jim Edmonds yesterday. Mesa will serve the suspension today and tomorrow.

9) X-rays on Yankees C Jorge Posada's toe were negative and he's day to day. There was concern that he had a broken left big toe.

10) Pirates P Francisco Cordova was going to go to the minors, for an injury rehab assignment, but he has recurring elbow pain and those plans were cancelled. Cordova's been on the DL all year and the Pirates had wanted him to have elbow surgery in spring training, but Cordova's doctors told him it wasn't necessary. Now, he's going to meet soon with Dr. James Andrews and if he does have reconstructive surgery, he's expected to have to miss next year.

Corrections from yesterday--

1) The Giants starter was Ryan Jensen, not Marcus Jensen.

2) Mark McGwire's 1996-97 seasons should have been on the list of players with 40+ HR who improved the next year. McGwire went from 52 to 58.

1) A MRI on Astros P Pedro Astacio's shoulder showed he has no structural damage. According to GM Gerry Hunsicker, "In all probability, Pedro will miss his scheduled start this weekend. Hopefully, he will make his next start after that, but we don't have a definite timetable on his return right now. A lot depends on how his shoulder responds to treatment."

2) Rangers P Kevin Foster became a free agent when he refused an assignment to the minors.

3) The Devil Rays sold minor league C Pat Borders to the Mariners. He moves from Tampa Bay's AAA team to Seattle's and could be a September callup.

4) Randy Myers, who hasn't pitched since 1998, had a workout with the Mariners before Sunday's game. While Myers said there is a "remote" chance he could pitch when the roster expand, the team was really interested in seeing if it worthwhile to invite him to spring training.

According to GM Pat Gillick, "We've been talking since January. We just wanted to see him throw. He threw all right. In fact, he threw better than I thought he'd throw."

5) The Dodgers will activate P Kevin Brown before tonight's game, which he'll start.

6) Phillies 3B Scott Rolen, who's been out of the lineup due to a strained left rib cage, says he expects to return today.

7) Cubs OF Rondell White is in the minors on a rehab assignment, but is still bothered by a groin injury and hasn't been able to play a full game. The team expects him to only be available as a pinch hitter when he's eventually activated from DL.

8) Indians P Jaret Wright will meet with Dr. Lewis Yocum on September 5. The team is recommending he has surgery on his ailing shoulder and if Dr. Yocum agrees, the surgery will take place a couple of days later.

9) Dodgers 2B Mark Grudzielanek fractured his finger on Sunday, missed yesterday's game and could be headed for the DL.

Grudzielanek's having his typical respectable AVG, but otherwise poor performance in 2001, hitting .405 SLG, .333 OBA, .738 OPS, -5 RCAA, .467 OWP, 5.10 RC/G, 61 RC in 109 games. He's working on his 6th negative RCAA season in his 7 year career and his .715 career OPS coming into the season was 60 points below his league average of .775.

10) The Angels sent P Mark Lukasiewicz to the minors.

11) Braves LF B.J. Surhoff recorded his 2000th career hit.

Surhoff's having a bad year, hitting .399 SLG, .314 OBA, .713 OPS, -13 RCAA, .400 OWP, 4.72 RC/G, 51 RC in 110 games. Unless he improves, this will be his 4th season with a double digit negative RCAA.

Surhoff came into the season with -10 RCAA and became the 27th player to reach 2000 hits and have a negative career RCAA.
