10) According to the LA Times, Dodgers P Omar Daal will probably not re-sign with the team when he becomes a free agent during the offseason. Daal wants a multiyear deal and an assurance he'll be used as a starter.

1) BlueJays 1B Carlos Delgado set the team record for career total bases.

The new top 10--

Code:
1 Carlos Delgado 2203 2 George Bell 2201 3 Tony Fernandez 2198 4 Lloyd Moseby 2128 5 Joe Carter 1934 6 Jesse Barfield 1672 7 Willie Upshaw 1579 8 Ernie Whitt 1475 9 John Olerud 1462 10 Shannon Stewart 1405

Early this year, he set the team record for TB above the league average--

Code:
TOTAL BASES DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE 1 Carlos Delgado 531 2203 1672 2 George Bell 466 2201 1735 3 Fred McGriff 299 1030 731 4 Jesse Barfield 291 1672 1381 5 John Olerud 245 1462 1217 6 Joe Carter 227 1934 1707 7 Shawn Green 217 1269 1052 8 Roberto Alomar 164 1221 1057 9 Paul Molitor 151 781 630 10 Tony Fernandez 114 2198 2084

2) Pirates bench coach Bill Virdon is stepping down. He plans on retiring from having an everyday job, but will be a spring training instructor.

3) The Cubs led the majors in hitting SO (1269) and pitching SO (1333). They became the first team to lead the majors in both categories since the 1884 Boston Reds, from the Union Association.

4) The Mets and Braves tied the major league record by using 45 players in a 9 inning game, tying the mark set by the Expos and Cubs, on September 5, 1978.

But, Rey Ordonez did not play and fell 2 PA shy of qualifying for the worst OPS title. If he had qualified, this would have been his 4th title in the past 5 years.

5) Astros P Octavio Dotel set the team record for games pitched in a season, with 83, breaking the mark set by Juan Agosto, in 1990.

6) Orioles VP of Baseball Operations (but he's performing the GM duties) Syd Thrift is expected to step down.

7) Royals GM Allard Baird says re-signing P Paul Byrd is the team's top priority, while LF Chuck Knoblauch, INF Luis Alicea and P Roberto Hernandez have all been told they're not coming back. All 4 players are going to be free agents.

Byrd says he's interested in returning to KC. After 6.51 ERA/-16 RSAA and 4.44 ERA/5 RSAA the past 2 years, Byrd had an apparent career year with a 3.90 ERA/35 RSAA in 33 starts. He has a 4.39 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.46, and 35 RSAA in 196 games.

Some highlights from UnderTheKnife--

8) Diamondbacks MGR Bob Brenly is uncomfortable with the idea of playing Erubiel Durazo playing RF in the postseason.

After 3 RCAA/.817 OPS and .909 OPS/10 RCAA the past 2 years, Durazo hit .550 SLG, .395 OBA, .944 OPS, 18 RCAA in 76 games. He has a .918 career OPS, compared to his league average of .782, and 50 RCAA in 287 games.

9) Cardinals P Andy Benes had to leave yesterday's start due to "massive back spasms. Andy was bent over and nearly screaming ..."

After 4.88 ERA/-4 RSAA and 7.38 ERA/-37 RSAA seasons, 2002 started off as another disaster for Benes and he appeared headed for retirement. But, after a lengthy stint on the DL, he turned things around and finished with a 2.78 ERA/12 RSAA season (18 G/17 GS). He has a 3.97 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.11, and 32 RSAA in 403 games.

10) If Padres P Trevor Hoffman needs surgery and there is any delay, it may force him to start next season on the DL.
