Default White Sox "surge to nowhere"

22-9 over the past month or so... good sign for next year or meaningless hot streak when al central race is done with?

Well, it can't hurt, and it helps Manuel keep his job.

Who have they been playing? That may tell right there. Were they playing in their division?

If Frank Thomas hadn't been a cipher for three months the White Sox would have won the division.

We're on a surge to nowhere,
Pale Hose high five.
Taking that ride to nowhere,
windy South Side.
May-be you think it will carry, into next year.

Hmmm....I don't know if he would have made THAT much impact.

The Twins have been coasting. Can't really say what would have happened if they were pressed. They may be up there with the A's and Yanks in terms of wins.

The Tigers could have undone every stupid personnel move they made in the past five years, too...that would have changed things, wouldn't it?

I don't see how it would have been possible for the Tigers to undue their stupid moves.

The White Sox have more talent than the Twins, and have statistically performed better. The White Sox are 15-20 in one-run games, and lost 11 one-run games in June and July alone. Thomas drove in just 22 runs in those two months. I think you'd be amazed how hard it is to win when your No. 3/4 hitter hits like Tony Womack for three months (see Mets 2002).

If Thomas has a real Frank Thomas year, hitting .300-40-120, then I'm quite certain the White Sox win the divison.

But certainly don't you think the Twins may have done things differently knowing someone was pressing them?

I don't discount the Twins talent, and the way they've handled the staff through injuries is commendable. I still say, WIN TWINS! this year.

Certainly, a lot of young teams fold under pressure, and the White Sox probably keep Ray Durham.

Of course there are 100 what-ifs but the fact is the White Sox have a +63 run differential and the Twins a +51. If Frank Thomas has his normal year then it's probably more like White Sox +95 and Twins +48. Given a 47-run advantage, I like the Sox's chances.

If if's and but's were candy and nuts every day would be Christmas.

Things even out in the long run. At the beginning of the year I pegged them for about 85 wins. They'll probably win about 83. There are a few bright spots..

Crede looks like the real deal at third
Garland and Wright got 35 starts under their belts
Alomar and Clayton and Lofton are gone
Buerhle proved last year wasn't a fluke

On the down side the sox will make some budget cuts. they'd like to unload thomas, but the ball is in thomas' court. 28 homers and 95 rbi and a .360 oba don't grow on trees (ask detroit, kc, tb, pit, cub, etc.) They'd like to deal Foulke if someone will take his $5 mil salary. If not, they'll probably make him a starter. They want to deal Lee and knowing Williams, they might get Lenny Harris in return (if I'm lucky).

Oh....Thomas gets hot for a month, and they're now the team to beat? Of that 22-9 run, they did go 2-1 against the Yankees, but they swept a Twins team that is coasting into the playoffs, and all the other teams except for Boston (which has been a .500 since about June) have been stiffs. Seven games against Kansas City, six against Toronto, four with Cleveland and three each with Detroit and Tampa Bay. I think they'll give the Twins a run for it next season, but this is a matter of playing decent during a very favorable stretch in the schedule.......

Isn't that about the time they cut Clayton? Maybe some of the other vets got the hint.

Yeah, KC, only has three guys with such numbers (Sweeney, Beltran, and Ibanez) and they all are position players.

As for the Pale Hose they are enjoying a nice run but who will remember it next year? Not even the players.

The Chisox did cut Clayton, a couple of weeks ago. First good move Kenny Williams has made during his GM tenure.
