Default New computer

I'm to the point of getting a new computer NOW and passing off the old one to the kids. Anyone with strong and substantiated opinions for or against a particular vendor, for product or service, please post now.

I agree that you can't go wrong with Dell. They will build a system to your specifications, and they have terrific support.

Don't get drawn in going with latest and greatest that is out there as far as processors. The new computers today have far more processing power than the average user needs. My suggestion is to get plenty of memory. 256 to 512 MB should be sufficent for whatever your doing.

I've been quite pleased with my HP Pavillion I bought in February.

My home computer is powered by hamsters and is held together with duct tape.
The people that put it together for me went out of business and left no forwarding address or phone #.
Other than that it's a real honey of a machine.
It doubles as a paper weight and a foot warmer at no extra charge as well.

Have had a Compaq Presario 1700T laptop for about a year now and have had zero problems. I also have friends who have Dell's and Gateway's. All seem reliable.

If you like to add pieces and parts and other things later, I suggest against some of the Compaq things. Most of the big pieces/parts (videocard, soundcard, etc) are tied into the motherboard of the Compaq I have, and it gets crabby when you add similar things.

On the other hand, if you just want to plug it in and go, Compaq is pretty good.

If you know somebody who puts these things together, a local computer service, that's an excellent way to go. They will work with you on price, and find exactly what you want, and they can get specials. That's if you don't want to build your own, computer guy!

I'd go for a Dell.

You might want to go for a refurbished computer. I'm sure you know this but DO NOT let anyone talk you into paying for some extended warranty on your computer, no matter what. In six months your computer will be obselete and in two years you could get the same one at a garage sale for $100.

I'd go for a Dell. You might want to try an online auction. On the other hand, computers are so freaking cheap it hardly matters. I'd recommend trying to get one of those package deals on accessories if you need them as well.

When it comes to computers you have to buy them just like you buy houses: Buy all you can afford.

As an IS manager we have standardized on Dell and have been very pleased. Good prices and good service.

If warranty service is not as important to you as upfront cost and you know something about hardware then having a local house "build" you a machine is an excellent way to to get more machine for your dollar.

Very happy with my Dell at home and the one at the office. If you're buying online, check out www.gotapex.com They compile deals found on the internet daily. There's almost always a link to some deal at Dell. Other manufacturers, too.
