Default Rickey

Did anyone notice ?

Rickey's recent cold spell has dropped his career batting average below .280

Rickey started the season with career averages of
BA .280 OBP .402 SLG .420

He is now at .279 / .402 / .419

If Rickey keeps playing, Barry Bonds will have passed him in BB and Runs BEFORE Rickey can be enshrined in Cooperstown.

.279 was Ralph Kiner's lifetime BA. Kiner, who gets surprisingly little respect , had an OBP of .398 and SLG .548

In other words, the longer Rickey persists in playing, the more ordinary his career non-counting stats will look

LET'S HANG IT UP RICKEY BEFORE PEOPLE FORGET WHAT A GREAT PLAYER YOU WERE

How could any wrong that he did compare with that?" - John Sears

Rickey is great, but he's not the same Rickey that he was a few years ago. He should retire, and move on.
A lot of players hold on too long and their percentage stats pay the price. Rickey is one of them. What more does he need to do in his career?

You know a .402 OBP and .419 SLG still ain't hay. Even if they dip a little bit, everyone will remember Rickey. His legacy is not in question.

Everyone remembers Joe Morgan. No one remembers his painful last few years.

Rickey has always had an interest not just in breaking records, but obliterating them.

I would have liked to have seen him hang it up years ago. It would have been nice if he bowed out gracefully after his big year with the Mets, leaving some meaty ratios at the bottom of his line. Some sports are conducive to hanging on; in hockey you can go from being a superstar to a checking center and not embarrass yourself. Baseball isn't one of those sports.

<fortune cookie fact> Those who think Rickey cares about his career numbers forget that the man probably can't count. </fcf>

I'm convinced that Rickey Henderson will play until they have to use the Jaws of Life to remove Rickey's jersey. I used to think that the day Rickey wasn't a top 10'er in steals was the day Rickey'd hang 'em up, but now I think Rickey's going to play forever...so baby remember his name. Although if Rickey plays too long, people will see him and cry...

Rickey's truly playing for love of the game. And if Rickey wants to play until he's got a cane, you can't stop Rickey.
Besides, I want to see Rickey keep playing, these posts in Rickey-speak are fun. And Rickey's still one of my all-time favorites, so that's worth something.

I believe Henderson has said that he'll play until they rip the uniform off his back. He loves the game... I'm sure he feels that he's already left his legacy as the greatest leadoff hitter of all-time, no matter what his career numbers end up as. And I agree, and I hope he plays another 5 years! He is my favorite all-time player.

Rickey with a cane will probably still have a good OBA and above average steals.

Exactly. I knew I should've put that in my post.
Rickey with a cane is still a lot faster then 90% of the players in major league baseball.

Let's see now...there's Raffy Palmeiro shilling Viagra.
Rickey can do ads for " Oops, I Crapped My Pants".
" How does Rickey know they work? Cause Rickey just did."

Rickey should have hung them up years ago.

Does anybody know anything about Rickey's family life? Doesn't Rickey have anybody Rickey wants to spend time with -- besides the obvious (Rickey)?

He's got a few daughters, I believe. And, has been quoted that he wants to be a farmer when he hangs them up --- not sure if he was kidding on that or not?
