1) Two fans attacked Royals 1B coach Tom Gamboa in the top of the 9th of yesterday's Royals-Whitesox game. One of them had a pocket knife and they are facing assault charges.
2) Pirates LF Brian Giles set the team single season record for walks by a left handed hitter. The new top 10-- Code:
Giles ranks 2nd on the all time team list, behind Ralph Kiner's 137, in 1951. 3) Phillies P Rheal Cormier had a MRI that showed he had tendonitis, but no tear. Cormier hasn't pitched since September 11. After 4.61 ERA/3 RSAA and 4.21 ERA/0 RSAA the past 2 years, Cormier's off to a 5.25 ERA/-10 RSAA start in his first 54 games. He has a 4.25 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.17, and -11 RSAA in 407 games. 4) Devil Rays C John Flaherty is day to day, due to a small fracture in his left middle finger. Flaherty's working on his 5th consecutive year with a double digit negative RCAA, while he's hitting .374 SLG, .296 OBA, .669 OPS, -11 RCAA in his first 76 games. He has a .669 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and -151 RCAA in 913 games. 5) Mets 3B Edgardo Alfonzo was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to a stomach virus, and was able to be used as a pinch hitter. After 56 RCAA/.967 OPS and -4 RCAA/.725 OPS the past 2 years, Alfonzo's off to a .464 SLG, .393 OBA, .856 OPS, 32 RCAA start in his first 128 games. He has a .813 career OPS, compared to his league average of .775, and 127 RCAA in 1079 games. 6) The Devil Rays called up C Paul Hoover and designated P Lee Gardner for assignment. 7) Royals 1B Mike Sweeney was out of yesterday's lineup, due to stiffness in his lower back, and is day to day. After 41 RCAA/.930 OPS and 28 RCAA/.916 OPS the past 2 years, Sweeney's off to a .577 SLG, .415 OBA, .991 OPS, 38 RCAA start in his first 118 games. He has a .881 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and 109 RCAA in 804 games. 8) According to the Denver Post, the Rockies are looking to trade CF Juan Pierre for a 3B. After starting his career with -19 and -7 RCAA seasons, Pierre's off to a .321 SLG, .318 OBA, .639 OPS, -37 RCAA start in his first 143 games. 9) Cardinals RF J.D. Drew says he'll definitely have offseason knee surgery. He's just not sure yet whether it will be arthroscopic surgery or laser microsurgery. After 20 RCAA/.880 OPS and 47 RCAA/1.027 OPS the past 2 years, Drew is off to a .422 SLG, .357 OBA, .779 OPS, 11 RCAA start in his first 126 games. He has a .875 career OPS, compared to his league average of .783, and 83 RCAA in 488 games. 10) According to the Kansas City Star, the Royals are probably going to non tender 2B Carlos Febles. That would be a good move. After -21 RCAA/.660 OPS and -19 RCAA/.654 OPS the past 2 years, Febles is off to a .345 SLG, .328 OBA, .673 OPS, -19 RCAA start in his first 112 games. He has a .697 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and -65 RCAA in 425 games. 11) The Royals are considering moving Michael Tucker to 2B. Tucker started his professional career as a 2B, back in 1993, but was moved to the OF after his first minor league season. Since then, he's only made one appearance at 2B, with the 2000 Reds. After 7 RCAA/.892 OPS and -9 RCAA/.738 OPS the past 2 years, Tucker is off to a .408 SLG, .328 OBA, .736 OPS, -15 RCAA start in his first 136 games. He has a .770 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and -24 RCAA in 1004 games. 12) The Padres are reportedly considering Gene Kingsale as a candidate for their starting CF and leadoff spots for next season. In his first season with more than 28 games, the 25 year old is off to a .404 SLG, .364 OBA, .768 OPS, 5 RCAA start in his first 82 games (first 2 games with the Mariners). 13) A MRI on Redsox CF Johnny Damon shows inflammation in his right knee and he might not have offseason surgery. After 32 RCAA/.877 OPS and -12 RCAA/.687 OPS the past 2 years, Damon's off to a .363 SLG, .324 OBA, .687 OPS, 22 RCAA start in his first 144 games. He has a .775 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and 42 RCAA in 1102 games. 14) Angels LF Garret Anderson tied the team's single season record with his 85th extra base hit, tying the mark set by Troy Glaus, in 2000. 15) The Marlins announced Jeff Torborg will manage the team next year. Torborg is already under contract for next season, which is the final year of his deal.

1) A's P Billy Koch set the Oakland record for games pitched in a season.
The new top 10-- Code:
The all time franchise record is 81, by John Wyatt, in 1964, when the team was located in Kansas City. 2) Expos P Bartolo Colon became the 2nd pitcher to be credited with 10 "wins" in both leagues in a season, joining Hank Borowy, who did it in 1945. Colon is the 3rd pitcher with at least a dozen RSAA in multiple leagues in a season and the first modern pitcher-- Code:
3) The Indians traded minor league OF Jason Fitzgerald to the Braves as the player to be named later in the spring training trade that sent C Eddie Perez to the Indians. 4) Phillies RF Bobby Abreu missed yesterday's game, due to a tight hamstring, and is expected to return to the lineup today. After 50 RCAA/.970 OPS and 44 RCAA/.936 OPS the past 2 years, Abreu's off to a .511 SLG, .407 OBA, .918 OPS, 50 RCAA start in his first 149 games. He has a .928 career OPS, compared to his league average of .779, and 231 RCAA in 842 games. 5) Phillies P Bud Smith is going to need surgery to repair a torn labrum, with a date not set yet. Smith, a pitching prospect, was acquired in the Scott Rolen trade and has been in the minors since the deal. 6) Tigers LF Bobby Higginson was out of yesterday's lineup, due to a strained muscle in his side, and his status for the weekend isn't known. After 42 RCAA/.915 OPS and 15 RCAA/.762 OPS the past 2 years, Higginson's off to a .417 SLG, .345 OBA, .762 OPS start in his first 119 games. He has a .839 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and 132 RCAA in 1091 games. 7) Marlins CF Preston Wilson was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to a sore left big toe, and is day to day. After 2 RCAA/.817 OPS and 4 RCAA/.825 OPS the past 2 years, Wilson is off to a .430 SLG, .330 OBA, .760 OPS, -6 RCAA start in his first 140 games. He has a .806 career OPS, compared to his league average of .784, and 4 RCAA in 595 games. 8) The Tigers called up OFs Craig Monroe and Andres Torres. 9) Astros P Carlos Hernandez will have a MRI on Monday and is consider shoulder surgery. While he hasn't been declared out for the rest of the season yet, I'd expect him to be shut down. The 22 year old, who came into the year as a highly rated pitching prospect, has a 4.38 ERA/-1 RSAA in 23 games (21 starts). He also had a 1.02 ERA/7 RSAA in 3 starts last year. 10) The Devil Rays became the first team since the 1964 Mets to win a series against a first place team after they already reached 100 losses. 11) Cardinals P Jason Isringhausen may be shut down for the remainder of the regular season, due to shoulder stiffness and pain. But, it sounds like he's still in their postseason plans. Meanwhile, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, "Cardinals officials have quietly expressed concern over Isringhausen's irregular conditioning habits and believe his recent shoulder problems may be connected to a lax regimen." After 3.78 ERA/7 RSAA and 2.65 ERA/13 RSAA the past 2 years, Isringhausen is off to a 2.45 ERA/10 RSAA start in his first 57 games. He has a 3.76 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.36, and 20 RSAA in 255 games. 12) The Cardinals got back to back to back HRs by Eli Marrero, Jim Edmonds and Albert Pujols in the 8th inning. 13) The Mariners and Rangers tied the major league record by playing 4 consecutive extra inning games against each other. Code:
The Mets-Pirates also played 4 consecutive extra inning games (May 24-25 and June 23-24), but played different opponents in the middle of that stretch.

Tucker is an average player (.770 career OPS), maybe a hair below average. He went throught the Royals farm system as an infielder (SS). Febles has been given four years to produce and while excellent defensively is woeful offensively (.700 career OPS) and has declined the last two years. Tucker is also under contract next year for $2.5M. The Royals would give him to someone if they could but no one wants him at that price. The Royals do not have a sign of a 2B in the organization ready for MLB, so they either continue with Febles and try to figure out what to do with Tucker (the Royals outfield is getting crowded) or dump Febles and move Tucker there. The only other choice is to see what comes available on the open market. If you do find someone then you are back to the quandary of what to do with Tucker. I'm not sure the Royals understand the concept of sunk money.

What are the odds he can play second base at an adequate level? Why was he moved from 2B 10 years ago? I seriously doubt he can play second base. Their best bet may be to eat half of his contract and trade him. He can play all three outfield positions and would be a useful reserve for a playoff contender. Second base is about the easiest position to fill. There are probably dozens potential candidates who will be minor league free agents. The royals had mike caruso. he would be a better bet than tucker. |
