I frequently peruse microfilms of old newspapers as research for my website on University of Missouri Baseball. While I am looking for old articles about Mizzou baseball, I come across interesting tidbits elsewhere on the sports pages.
This week, I've been researching the local papers (The Columbia Daily Tribune) from Springtime 25 years ago -- 1977. Some interesting quotes: "Relief pitcher Al Hrabosky says he's satisfied for the moment with the St. Louis Cardinals' controversial grooming code but may have more to say later. Those words came yesterday after manager Vern Rapp called a club meeting at which the matter of who is boss was thrashed out. Hrabosky, who a day earlier had attacked Rapp's regulations against beards and the Fu Manchu mustache he once wore, said the criticism "wasn't brought up at the meeting, but it was alluded to." "I still think I was right as an individual," he added. "I apologized because I'm a member of a team." --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pitcher Mark Fidrych of the Tigers today was scheduled to be examined at a Detroit hospital for possbile cartilage damage to his left knee. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cincinnati third baseman Pete Rose, who has been demanding a $400,000 salary, told the Reds if he is not signed by opening day, his price will go up $25,000 every 30 days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

that's good fun. I used to do that at the university library once in a while. maybe someday all this stuff will be on the internet. I'd love it.

If memory serves...Vern got a bad "Rapp". He wasn't that bad of a manager; those Cards teams had some bad actors.
He wasn't that good, either, as his later stint in Cincy showed. He should have managed about 15 to 20 years earlier. |
