I know many managers, including Bobby Cox insist on carrying a third catcher on the post season roster. I was wondering what yall thought about that practice, and how important you thought it was....Seems to me the spot could be used more efficantly with a 5th Outfielder, 6th Infielder or 12th pitcher....what do yall think??
PS- Here is my shot at the Braves Post Season roster...wonder if yall agree or disagree with it, and would love to see projected rosters for the other playoff teams... Andrew 1. Maddux 2. Glavine 3. Millwood 4. Moss 5. Smoltz 6. Remlinger 7. Hammond 8. Holmes 9. Ligtenberg 10. Marquis 11. Spooneybarger 12. A. Jones 13. C. Jones 14. Sheffield 15. Bragg 16. Lopez 17. Blanco 18. Torrealba 19. J. Franco 20. M. Franco 21. Lockhart 22. Furcal 23. Castilla 24. DeRosa 25. Giles |

Teams usually don't use more than 8 or 9 pitchers in postseason so adding extra position players, especially catchers is better than carrying pitchers that won't be used.

Oh, these days teams carry 11 or 12 pitchers even in postseason, when they couldn't possibly need them. Part of that is how much you are locked in with the August 31 roster, depending on the number of guys on the DL.

do you remember when Baylor went into the playoffs with 13 pitchers, and had to send up a pitcher to pinch-hit against Greg Maddux?

I think the Braves will only carry two catchers and add an OF. Everything else looks pretty dead on. I don't think all those pitchers are needed, but since the pen has been such a big part of their success, it'd be tough to leave any of them off. If Lopez is hurt, they could DL him and bring in Torrealba.

Who would you put on as a 5th OF? It's kind of hard to put one on when there isn't one.
Torrealba is available, and based on past history, he is on. They have the luxury, and thus he will be on a third catcher, since I'm assuming Wes Helms isn't returning this year. |
