19) Lance Berkman reached 40 HR for the 1st time.
Berkman became the 5th different switch hitter to hit 40 HR in a season. Code:
Berkman has 74 RCAA for the season. Only 2 other switch hitters in modern history have exceeded that-- Code:
(Tommy Tucker, 85, 1889 would be the only 19th century addition to the top 10). His .271 OPS above the league average has also only been exceeded by 2 different switch hitters-- Code:
20) Andruw Jones reached 30 HR for the 4th time and 3rd consecutive year. Jones also tied the major league record by homering in 4 consecutive AB. Most seasons, 30+ HR, through the age of 25-- Code:
However, Jones fails to make it into the top 10 for HR vs. the league average through the age of 25-- Code:
Meanwhile, his 60 career RCAA puts him in a tie for 234th through the age of 25.

1) The Cardinals activated P Matt Morris from the DL.
After starting his career with 3.19 ERA/20 RSAA and 3.53 ERA/23 RSAA seasons in 1997-98, Morris missed the entire 1999 season and pitched out of the bullpen in 2000, posting a 3.57 ERA/6 RSAA. He had a 3.16 ERA/28 RSAA in his return to the rotation in 2001 and is off to a 3.25 ERA/14 RSAA start in his first 29 starts this year. Morris has a 3.13 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.26, and 91 RSAA in 144 games. The 1.13 difference between Morris and the league ERA, through the age of 27, is a Cardinals record (MIN: 500 IP) Code:
With Morris returning to the rotation, recently acquired Jamey Wright goes to the bullpen. After 4.10 ERA/6 RSAA and 4.90 ERA/-11 RSAA in his first 2 seasons after being liberated from Coors, Wright is off to a 5.47 ERA/-21 RSAA start in his first 21 starts (first 19 with the Brewers). He has a 5.19 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.33, and -32 RSAA in 172 games. 2) Cubs P Matt Clement had to leave Monday's start, due to back spasms, but said yesterday his back feels better and he doesn't expect to miss his next start. After 5.14 ERA/-21 RSAA and 5.05 ERA/-16 RSAA the past 2 years, Clement is off to a 3.41 ERA/13 RSAA start in his first 29 starts. He has a 4.52 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.42, and -27 RSAA in 129 games. 3) Angels 3B Troy Glaus was out of yesterday's lineup, due to a jammed ring finger. After 48 RCAA/1.008 OPS and 24 RCAA/.898 OPS the past 2 years, Glaus is off to a .438 SLG, .350 OBA, .788 OPS, 12 RCAA start in his first 139 games. He has a .851 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and 70 RCAA in 661 games. 4) The Orioles say Scott Erickson will be dropped from the rotation for the rest of the year. He'll go to the bullpen, but they aren't even saying they will commit to using him there. After 4.81 ERA/-1 RSAA and 7.87 ERA/-33 RSAA in 1999-2000, Erickson missed the entire 2001 season is off to a 5.55 ERA/-19 RSAA start in his first 28 starts (plus 1 relief appearance). He has a 4.51 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.54, and -4 RSAA in 355 games. 5) Astros P Doug Brocail is going to have more surgery, this time to repair a stress fracture and nerve in his elbow. He's also had Tommy John surgery, has missed all of 2001-02 and we can probably add 2003 to that list. 6) The Indians are dropping Jaret Wright from the rotation and will replace him with September callup Jason Davis. After a 6.08 ERA/-16 RSAA in 1999, Wright appeared in a total of just 16 games in 2000-01 and is off to a 15.98 ERA/-21 RSAA start in his first 6 starts. He has a 5.47 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.71, and -43 RSAA in 96 games. Wright's .76 ERA worse than the league average is the worst figure in Indians history (MIN: 500 IP)-- Code:
7) Royals SS Neifi Perez says he was just kidding around when he refused to go into Monday's game. Perez had a closed door meeting with MGR Tony Pena and Pena refuses to comment. 8) The Phillies called up P Eric Junge. 9) The Whitesox activated P Todd Ritchie from the DL. After 4.81 ERA/-5 RSAA and 4.47 ERA/-3 RSAA with the Pirates the past 2 years, Ritchie is off to a 6.18 ERA/-22 RSAA start in his first 23 starts. He has a 4.67 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.53, and -12 RSAA in 172 games. 10) The Expos called up 2B Jamey Carroll and placed 2B Jose Macias on the 60 day DL. Macias has a sprained left wrist. After starting his career with .692 OPS/-5 RCAA and .707 OPS/-8 RCAA seasons (plus 5 games in a cup of coffee callup in 1999), he finishes this season with a .379 SLG, .293 OBA, .672 OPS, -15 RCAA in 123 games (first 33 with the Tigers). 11) Pirates C prospect J.R. House had reconstructive elbow surgery and is expected to miss most, or all, of the 2003 season. 12) The Indians called up OF Coco Crisp. This cookie crisp fan would have preferred a different nickname for Crisp. He's off to a .350 SLG, .288 OBA, .638 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 15 major league games. 13) The A's activated P Ted Lilly from the DL. After a 5.37 ERA/-12 RSAA with the Yankees last season, Lilly is off to a 3.60 ERA/8 RSAA start in his first 19 games (14 starts: first 16 G/11 GS with the Yankees). 14) The Braves activated 1B-3B Wes Helms from the DL. After a .728 OPS/-7 RCAA as a 25 year old rookie in 2001 (plus 13 games in 1998/2000), Helms is off to a .416 SLG, .290 OBA, .707 OPS, -6 RCAA start in his first 80 games. 15) Angels P Jarrod Washburn is under investigation for a sexual assault against a minor allegation. After 3.74 ERA/12 RSAA and 3.77 ERA/22 RSAA the past 2 years, Washburn is off to a 3.32 ERA/18 RSAA start in his first 29 starts. He has a 3.89 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.61, and 49 RSAA in 104 games. Washburn's working on becoming just the 6th pitcher in team history to have at least a dozen RSAA in 3 consecutive years. Code:
16) The Padres activated LF Ray Lankford from the DL. After 11 RCAA/.874 OPS and 15 RCAA/.849 OPS the past 2 years, Lankford is off to a .376 SLG, .345 OBA, .722 OPS, 1 RCAA start in his first 68 games. He has a .845 career OPS, compared to his league average of .756, and 236 RCAA in 1596 games. 17) A's INF Olmedo Saenz is in danger of losing his spot on the postseason roster, to Adam Piatt. Saenz has a finger injury that has been slow responding to treatment and he's not expected to be able to return until the last week of the season. After .915 OPS/15 RCAA and .675 OPS/-13 RCAA the past 2 years, Saenz is off to a .474 SLG, .349 OBA, .823 OPS, 3 RCAA start in his first 66 games. he has a .795 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and 9 RCAA in 350 games. 18) Braves 2B Marcus Giles had to leave yesterday's game, due to a bruised left collar bone. After a .769 OPS/-6 RCAA in 68 games as a 23 year old rookie in 2001, Giles is off to a .435 SLG, .325 OBA, .761 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 57 games. 19) The Mets activated P Grant Roberts from the DL. After a 3.81 ERA/1 RSAA in 16 games in 2001, the once highly touted prospect is off to a 2.09 ERA/8 RSAA start in his first 29 games. 20) Diamondbacks RF David Dellucci left yesterday's game, due to a mild concussion, and is day to day. After .712 OPS/-2 RCAA and .828 OPS/4 RCAA the past 2 years, Dellucci is off to a .399 SLG, .326 OBA, .725 OPS, -9 RCAA start in his first 86 games. He has a .769 career OPS, compared to his league average of .771, and -7 RCAA in 439 games. 21) The Rangers record streak of 27 consecutive games with a HR ended.

7) Royals SS Neifi Perez says he was just kidding around when he refused to go into Monday's game. Perez had a closed door meeting with MGR Tony Pena and Pena refuses to comment.
Perez has really been taking the heat from the local media and fans as more of them come to realize what a poor offensive player he is. They rip him for hitting .230 and making $4M a year. The $4M is not his fault. What was he supposed to do? Turn the money down? This is really the first known instance of Neifi acting unprofessionally. As much heat as he is getting he keeps going out everyday and playing and keeping his mouth shut. He may not be much of a hitter but he has impressed me as a man.
