Default Who will be the national champion?

After watching Miami dismantle Florida on Saturday, it's pretty clear that the Gators are unlikely to be playing on the season's last day.

Miami has to be the favorite, but they still have to play host to Florida State next month, travel to Tennessee in November, and finish up against Virginia Tech in December. Texas, Tennesse, Virginia Tech, and several others seem to have a shot right now.

All that said, I'm still picking Miami to repeat. My biggest concern is the game against the Volunteers, but I haven't been impressed with too many teams over the first couple of weeks.

Any predictions?

Miami certainly looks as if they're not skipping a beat. In fact it looks like the beat is getting stronger! It's tough to not go with the defending champs.

I'm holding out hope that the Michigan/Ohio St. game this year will have some national champion ramifications. It looks like both schools will duke it out barring some unforseen loss.

(Is the Big Ten champ back to being a Rose Bowl lock this year? And if so, could the Big Ten have a National Champion with the BCS stuff?)

I don't know much about college football but it seems that a lot of people are throwing around incredibly high praise for Miami ..."maybe the best college team ever" "they could play in the NFL."

im not going to engage in conjecture, but i will say that even though I'm a miami fan, even i've been impressed at how good they've been after losing 9 first rounders in 2 years.

I wanna see how Tennessee does against Florida before seeing if they have any chance against Miami in November. Otherwise, Miami looks awfully good right now.....

YT - I was thinking the same thing. No one will touch them this year, I fear. They have 199 players on their numerical roster.

The last Big 10 team to make a run was when the school who shall not be mentioned won half the title in '97. But I believe they played in the Rose Bowl, beat Washington State, and when Nebraska won their bowl game, they split the title.

I think the deal now is that Big 10 plays Pac 10 in Pasadena, unless either team is ranked one or two. Say Ohio State is ranked #2, plays #1 Miami, then Ohio State plays in the (sugar? which one is it?) championship game (and wins the national championship, and sheds the curse from the northern 2/3 of Ohio), and the rose bowl gets to pick an at-large BCS team.

Our Buckeyes have a good shot at losing maybe once, and it won't be the last game. Washington State is our toughest challenge all year until we play that team up north.

If the Big Ten has a team that is ranked either 1 or 2 at the end of the regular season, they would bypass the Rose Bowl to play in the national championship this game, which this season will be the Fiesta Bowl on January 3rd.

The Rose Bowl committee then would select a replacement team for the Big Ten champ. What's interesting is that the replacement doesn't necessarily have to be a Big Ten team. The criteria states that the team must be ranked among the Top 12 in the final BCS standings, and have 9 wins. Hopefully, if that case arose, they would be able to find a second Big 10 team, but it's hard to know what would happen.

The Rose Bowl will be back on New Years Day for the next 3 years, until it becomes the championship game again in January of 2006.

Ah yes, the scourge of the Ohio Athletic Conference! Any good Ohio Northern team (my fair alum) was always squashed by those monsters!

ARGH!!!!

(Thanks for clearing up the BCS picture if Ohio St. makes some noise.)

I thought the Polar Bears had a shot until their star QB went out. I'm wish we would have kept Ohio Northern on the schedule. Wabash played them once, and I would rather play them than Kalamazoo.

wait, i like florida. why?

because if there is no undefeated team, the earliest 10-1 team to lose their game always ends up #1, even if that makes little sense.
