Default A Ttally Dfferent Pete Sampras Thread

Did anyone else have the fortune to see the Sampras Blitzkreig over Andy Roddick last night?

This may be the feel-good-story-of-the sporting-year.

I watched it, and it was fun to see him taking Roddick apart.

Sampras has never been my favorite, but it's impossible not to admire the guy for all that he's accomplished. Roddick might be the future of American tennis, but I think Sampras taught him a valuable lesson last night. Talent only gets you so far, and Sampras has always had fantastic preparation and work ethic to go with his skills. The difference between their demeanors - the brash, cocky kid and the subdued veteran - was also fun to watch.

And on a non-tennis note, it's great to see that Pete will be a dad. His tennis career is likely to end in the next few years, and I think the timing of fatherhood couldn't be better for him.

I don't think there was anything better to watch, than Pete Samras smile as he won the match... he kicked Roddicks ass, and rightfully deserves to make this his last grand slam championship!!!

Go Sampras...

Go Sampras...

I'd like to see home go out with an upset at the French, personally - althought, if you asked me which one I htouhgt he'd ever win again - it'd be Wimbledon

I think he'll do it. In my mind, Agassi would get him this time, if they played, but he won't get past Hewitt. Sampras sucks it up big and beats Hewitt in the final.

Of course, its just as likely that Sampras reverts to recent form and gets by Rumplestiltskin in the semis.

I'm rooting for Andre though.

Yes, I'm happy for Sampras and wish I could have seen the match but though he's got a great shot at getting to the final, Sjeng, don't think so, but waiting will be either Hewitt or Agassi. Hewitt will take it to him just like last year because Lleyton just does not make big mistakes and his serve is just good enough to keep Sampras back. Last year's match with Agassi in the Quarters was awesome and I'd love to see that again, albeit with Agassi taking it this time. The difference between Hewitt and Agassi is that Hewitt is faster, more fit, and therefore has a greater margin of error in his game than Agassi. Sampras over Hewitt would be great but unlikely.

I caught some of the match Sunday....

I am torn between thinking that Sampras managed to turn back the clock -- he was overpowering at times -- and thinking that this final is an indictment of the rest of the current men's field.

I thought Agassi showed a lot of heart. Agassi always has to concede a lot of points to Sampras on aces, and there were a handful of key games where Sampras got winners on balls that a 28-year-old Agassi would have tracked down.

(don't forget, though, that 28 year old pete sampras doesn't tire so quickly either)

Certainly -- I'm saying Andre looked more his age than Sampras.
