3) Wild card standings--

Code:
AL WON LOST GB Angels 82 54 - Mariners 80 57 2 1/2 Redsox 76 58 5 NL WON LOST GB Dodgers 79 57 - Giants 77 59 2 Astros 72 64 7 Phillies 69 66 9 1/2

4) The Royals will be mathematically eliminated from winning the division title and from the postseason if they lose to the A's or the Twins beat the Mariners.

5) The Rangers have been mathematically eliminated from winning the division title.

With 75 losses, it's mathematically possible for the Rangers to finish with 87 wins. Since nobody else in the division has reached 87 W yet, that would appear to keep them alive. But, the A's and Angels have 8 games against each other and there is no combination of those games that can keep both of them under 87.

6) The Padres will be mathematically eliminated from winning the division title, but not from the postseason, if they lose to the Rockies or the Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers.

7) Magic numbers--

AL East--Yankees, 21
AL Central--Twins, 13
AL West--A's, 23

12) Miguel Tejada reached 30 HR for the 3rd time and 3rd consecutive year.

Tejada became the 3rd SS to hit 30+ HR in at least 3 consecutive years.

Code:
1 Alex Rodriguez 1998-02 5 2 Ernie Banks 1957-60 4 3 Miguel Tejada 2000-02 3 T4 Vern Stephens 1949-50 2 T4 Nomar Garciaparra 1997-98 2

He also became the 3rd SS to have at least 3 career 30+ HR seasons.

Code:
1 Alex Rodriguez 6 2 Ernie Banks 5 3 Miguel Tejada 3 T4 Vern Stephens 2 T4 Nomar Garciaparra 2 T6 Tony Batista 1 T6 Rico Petrocelli 1 T6 Rich Aurilia 1 T6 Cal Ripken 1 T6 Barry Larkin 1

After 11 RCAA/.828 OPS and 7 RCAA/.801 OPS the past 2 years, Tejada's off to a .518 SLG, .352 OBA, .870 OPS, 16 RCAA start in his first 137 games. He has a .787 career OPS, compared to his league average of .747, and 2 RCAA in 749 games.

17) The A's set the franchise record with their 18th consecutive win. They will attempt to tie the AL record today, which is held by the 1906 Whitesox and 1947 Yankees.

18) The Mets tied the NL record with their 14th consecutive loss, tying the mark set by the 1911 Boston Braves (who were then known as the Rustlers).

Correction from Saturday--Mark McGwire twice hit 3 HR as a visitor against the Phillies, not the A's.

1) Jim Thome reached 100 walks for the 4th consecutive year and the 6th time in his career.

Thome is the only player in Indians history to ever have consecutive 100 walks seasons. In addition to his current streak, he also had a 2 year streak, in 1996-97.

Everyone else in Indians history has combined for just 8 100 BB seasons--

Code:
1 Jim Thome 6 T2 Mike Hargrove 2 T2 Jack Graney 2 T4 Les Fleming 1 T4 Larry Doby 1 T4 Andre Thornton 1 T4 Al Rosen 1

2) Chuck Finley passed Warren Spahn into 19th place on the all time SO list and #5 for lefties.

The new LHP top 10--

Code:

Going into spring training last year, Ortiz was considered the A's 2B of the future. He had a .736 OPS/-14 RCAA as a 24 year old rookie last season, with the final 53 games coming with the Rockies, and is off to a .306 SLG, .309 OBA, .615 OPS, -13 RCAA start in his first 53 games.

Petrick was once considered the Rockies C of the future, but now he has to be considered trade bait of the present, with the bait not having much value. He's off to a .296 SLG, .211 OBA, .506 OPS, -9 RCAA start in his first 27 games and has -18 RCAA in 183 career games.

Flores, a 26 year old rookie, is off to a 4.15 ERA/2 RSAA start in his first 21 major league games, with the first 20 coming with the Rangers.

After 6.35 ERA/-4 RSAA and 4.15 ERA/0 RSAA in 1999-2000, Jones missed the entire 2001 season, due to an injury. He's off to a 5.74 ERA/-5 RSAA start in 16 games (2 starts) this year, with the first 12 with the Mets. Jones has a 5.78 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.37, and -12 RSAA in 96 games.

12) Marlins CF Preston Wilson was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to personal reasons. He was able to be used as a defensive replacement when he returned to the park later in the day.

After 2 RCAA/.817 OPS and 4 RCAA/.825 OPS the past 2 years, Wilson is off to a .429 SLG, .337 OBA, .766 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 124 games. He has a .808 career OPS, compared to his league average of .784, and 8 RCAA in 579 games.

MGR Jeff Torborg says they will "play it by ear" as to whether Wilson is going to make the trip to the New York for their series against the Mets.

13) Yankees RF Raul Mondesi had to be removed from Saturday's game and missed yesterday's, due to a sore right knee.

After 4 RCAA/.852 OPS and -2 RCAA/.794 OPS the past 2 years, Mondesi's off to a .440 SLG, .311 OBA, .751 OPS, -7 RCAA start in his first 124 games, with the first 75 with the BlueJays. He has a .825 career OPS, compared to his league average of .770, and 116 RCAA in 1285 games.

14) The Padres set the major league record by using 57 players, breaking the mark held by the 1915 A's.

15) The BlueJays called up P Jason Kershner, who then had recently claimed off waivers from the Padres.

16) The Brewers activated P Nick Neugebauer from the DL.

Neugebauer, a 21 year old rookie who also made 2 starts last year, is off to a 4.81 ERA/-4 RSAA start in his first 8 starts.
