Derek Jeter/Alfonso Soriano
The following question was raised on my discussion list and since the information may be of interest to those beyond that list, here it is--
Q--"Derek Jeter has twenty home runs, and 27 stolen bases. Alfonso Soriano has 17 home runs and 40 stolen bases. Has there ever been another keystone combo in the history of MLB where both second baseman and shortstop had twenty plus home runs and 30 plus stolen bases?" My answer-- There have been 15 instances of a middle infielder having 20+ HR and 40+ SB in a season. Not only has it never been done by teammates, but there is also only 1 instance in which it was done by players in the same season-- YEAR TEAM HR SB POS Bert Campaneris 1970 A's 22 42 SS Joe Morgan 1973 Reds 26 67 2B Joe Morgan 1974 Reds 22 58 2B Joe Morgan 1976 Reds 27 60 2B Joe Morgan 1977 Reds 22 49 2B Davey Lopes 1979 Dodgers 28 44 2B Dickie Thon 1983 Astros 20 34 SS Ryne Sandberg 1985 Cubs 26 54 2B Juan Samuel 1987 Phillies 28 35 2B Craig Biggio 1995 Astros 22 33 2B Barry Larkin 1996 Reds 33 36 SS Craig Biggio 1997 Astros 22 47 2B Craig Biggio 1998 Astros 20 50 2B Alex Rodriguez 1998 Mariners 42 46 SS Roberto Alomar 1999 Indians 24 37 2B In addition to Jeter and Soriano, Alomar has a chance to do it this year. He has 17 HR and 27 SB.

Shoot - how many rooks, period, go 20-40?
I don't think Sori will get the 20 HRs - unless he hits two in a game somewhere and gets a boost. Of all the players on the list, he most reminds me of Samuel. Hope AS has a better career than JS. |
