Default What is Walt Jocketty thinking?

I appreciate Walt Jocketty's optimism for the Cardinals, trading on the heels of a strike. But can somebody tell me what the heck he is trying to accomplish with acquiring Jeff Fassero and now Jamey Wright?

Most of my problems are with Wright because a personal favorite, Simontacchi, got sent to the minors to make room for him, but I really cannot figure out the purpose of either deal, Fassero has lost his touch this year, and Wright is no better this year then the guy he's replacing. Maybe there are people who are more "in the know" about this sort of thing, but both of these deals confuse me, and they have the POTENTIAL to cost them the division with the way the Astros are playing.

Anyone, can someone fill me in on why he's doing this?

well, it's always handy to have an extra lefty in the pen (fassero), especially the way Tony goes through relievers. the wright thing i'm not sure about. i guess he's a little better than simontacchi. i guess.

Panic buying of "proven veterans" to replace a staff that is banking on relatively unproven pitchers.

It's why the Cards won't do anything if'n there is a playoffs. If they get there to begin with.

I always loved Fasero, well that is not true. He whines like a little girl but other than that he can be ok.

As long as he's not pitching. I'd rather have Felix Heredia back....

He acquired Wright primarily for this week-end games (assuming they are played). Simontacchi wouldn't have been available to pitch and the Cards have a double header Saturday. They plan is to bring him back Monday ot Tuesday.

I just wonder how this effects his eligibility to pitch in the post season.

I think that both trades will help a banged up staff. They have injuries and they don't have the prospect base to trade for guys that are much better. These traded, especially the one of Wright, will help them get there, imo. He's pitched well lately and has averaged seven innings per start in August, something that no current Cardinals pitcher can claim.

Wright will help them get to the playoffs, but I don't think it's likely that he'll start any playoff games. They don't need him for that.

The issue is that Jeff Fassero hasn't been able to get lefties out this year (he hasn't been able to get anyone out this year, but moreso lefties):

vs. Right
129 AB
.813 OPS

vs. Left
88 AB
.853 OPS

Add to this the fact that Fassero is about 40 years old and has been about as horrid as you can get this year, I don't understand why anyone would want him. As a Cubs fan, I'm just glad that somebody took him.

He's still on the 40 man roster, so as I understand it he can be put on a playoff roster as long as someone from the current roster goes on the DL. I could be completely wrong, though.

Actually Walt has made some very shrewd moves, bandaids maybe, but they are working now. The reason Simontacchi was sent down is because he had options left and no one else did and he can be called up today as it is Sept. 1st. Fassero was aquirred to get out one left hander out. Wright on a good team and Duncan as his pitching coach may want to re-sign with the Cards.

The Cardinals have to be one of the best stories of 2002 with all they have been through. Using 14 starting pitchers this year leads the pack, and they have a 4 game lead. The Astros have always worried us Card fans, and their run in August proved us right. So here is hoping that those 7 games with them this month does not come back and haunt us.

Fassero can't get ANYONE out, much less a lefty. He's not a LOOGY, and if the Cards force him that role he'll be even more of an abject failure that he was with the Cubs.

I don't trust the SYCOPHANTIC TOADY as working well with any pitchers, so Wright's reinassance will have to be seen to be believed.

Since he got liberated from Colorado, Wright's been a serviceable pitcher when healthy ... earlier this season, he clearly wasn't 100 percent.
