Unhappy Gal Dies In Bush League Promo

Not the greatest thing that could ever happen for minor league promotions.............Disney will probably settle out of court real quick. Shame. The last thing you ever expect when going to a game is that you'll never leave there alive.

Woman dies in Orlando Rays minor-league promotion
.c The Associated Press

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) - A woman taking part in a minor-league baseball promotion collapsed and died as she ran across the baseball field in search of a hidden diamond.

Victoria Lampe, 28, was one of about 250 women and girls who took part in the promotion after Friday night's game between the Orlando Rays and Jacksonville Suns.

The object of the promotion is for the women to run from the outfield wall to the infield and search through the infield dirt for a small box containing a diamond, according to Rick Vaughn, public relations vice president for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, parent of the Orlando team.

Lampe appeared to suffer a seizure in the infield of the Disney's Wide World of Sports stadium, according to Bo Jones, a spokesman for Reedy Creek Fire Department.

The Orlando woman was not breathing and had no pulse when paramedics arrived, Jones said Saturday. She was taken to Celebration Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Osceola County Sheriff's Office is investigating, although no foul play is suspected, said Carol Garcia, a sheriff's spokeswoman.

``Just as she got to the infield, she collapsed face first,'' Vaughn said. ``It's a terrible, tragic accident. Our thoughts are with the family.''

A call to the Devil Rays' office on Sunday was not immediately returned.

That's terrible, although I'd hate to see Disney shoulder too much blame. If she was a willing participant and knew what was involved, then I think this one has to be chalked up as a natural event, albeit a tragic one.

I can't imagine how that must feel for her family. I hate reading these types of stories.

That's horrible, but I can't see how its the fault of the team.

That is sad, but I can't see how much culpability is here. I do bet Disney does try to do something, though.

This is a real shame... and it sounds like no one is at fault. I hope this doesn't scare off other minor league teams from doing the crazy mid-inning things that make minor league games so entertaining.

i hope disney helps the family out, but i dont see any legal obligation on their part. sounds like assumed risk to me. (or at least, that's the 2nd year law student analysis )

Yes, a real tragedy for that family. Disney, the Devil Rays, and the minor league club are in a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. If they don't help out they look cold and callous and if they do they will look like they are trying to get out of liability cheap.

Don't see any liability to anyone here but I am sure there is an ambulance chaser somewhere that will beg to differ.
