So far, 21 numbers have been covered, so the numerical roster looks like this:
1. Ozzie Smith 2. Charlie Gehringer 3. Babe Ruth 4. Lou Gehrig 5. Johnny Bench 6. Stan Musial 7. Mickey Mantle 8. Yogi Berra 9. Ted Williams 10. Lefty Grove 11. Carl Hubbell 12. Roberto Alomar 13. Larry Parrish 14. Ernie Banks 15. Red Ruffing 16. Whitey Ford 17. Cool Papa Bell 18. Red Faber 19. Bob Feller 20. Frank Robinson 1/8. Eddie Gaedel. And a lineup something like this: 1.) Alomar, 2B 2.) Musial, LF 3.) Williams, DH 4.) Ruth, RF 5.) Mantle, CF 6.) Gehrig, 1B 7.) Banks, SS 8.) Berra/Bench, C 9.) Gehringer, 3B There is not a real 3B on the team, so someone, whether Gehringer, Bench, or Banks would have to move there. I used Charlie for defense, figuring a team that could bat a platoon of Berra and Bench 8th would score plenty of runs. SP Lefty Grove SP Carl Hubbell SP Whitey Ford SP Bob Feller RP Red Ruffing RP Red Faber An all-Red bullpen to support those amazing starters. Bench: Ozzie Smith, defensive replacement at SS; Larry Parrish, 3rd catcher; Cool Papa Bell, pinch-runner and Ruth's caddy; Frank Robinson, the 11th man in the lineup (could Frank play 3rd?); Eddie Gaedel, our pinch hitter when a baserunner is sorely needed. An impressive team, even with "only" 21 players I still couldn't fit F. Robby into the lineup. I'll repeat for the rest of the numbers as a unit later. |

You need an executive override to get Schmidt in over F. Robby.

You know, any team that can't make room for Frank Robinson scares me. With this lineup, you could play anyone at third. Put Babe Ruth there for all it matters. The defensive liability will be more than made up for by offense.

Let him play second. He's so far past Alomar on offense that we could send a statue out to second and come out a head.

The Reds tried him at 3B

How could any wrong that he did compare with that?" - John Sears |

Yeah. If the offensive gain was so much bigger, why isn't Bonds playing shortstop? |
