Michael Irvin is a jackass on Fox. (Is that a prerequisite? ) He's only on the network because they have Aikman. And he's plywood as an analyst. Of course, they do have Moose Johnston.

Even with his "problems", he was a great reciever for the time, and he's going to Canton eventually. Though I'd hate to hear the induction speech.

He's part of a great tandem in NFL history, yes, but individually, he's not among the penultimate greats, just the lower end ones, "Supernal" more then "Immortal". He's just helped by his pass-happy era. Anyone could catch 100 back then. At least that's what I see.

The #1 guy is Rice. No matter the era or the rules he is the man. Tons of other guys deserve respect and mention.

Michael Irvin is a world class jerk but he must be one helluva receiver because him and Emmitt Smith made the very average Troy Aikman look great.

I think the success of Aikman is more a tribute to the dominating defense and offensive line. Emmitt I must say was extremely good. That line though, whoa. Allen is/was great (Sonoma State, unbelievable) and I forgot that tackle's name, dirty as hell but unstoppable.

Aikman wasn't great, but the strongest part of his game was his accuracy. The Dallas OL was incredible back during their glory days, so Irvin had hours to get open before Troy had to throw the ball.

That's not to take it all away from Irvin. He was obviously one of the best of his generation, just not what I'd consider an "all-timer."

That you get a guy out of Sonoma State, where the hell is that anyway?, to become one of this era's great guards is a testament to whomever it is that coached the 'Boys O-Line.

BTW, was it Erik Williams you were thinking of?

Pokes had a line that was so good that it should've been nicknamed. Allen, Williams, Mark Stepnoski, Mark Tuinei, and Nate Newton were one hell of a unit. No wonder Irvin was able to make Aikman (not to mention himself) look good so often.
Gotta wonder how many of THOSE guys responsible for making Aikman and Irvin HOF'ers (and for making Smith the big-timer he is) will also be HOF'ers.

LeGrand,

Williams is who I was thinking of. Sonoma State is a California State University in Upper Northern California near where supposedly some of the world's best munchie inducing material is harvested.

Sorry about Les Expos, too bad it couldn't survive up there, I always enjoyed the tri-color unis and loved Ron Fairly and Rusty Staub as lovable Expos.

exactly. I agree that he's not an all-timer, but the passes irvin was being thrown were regularly perfectly thrown...

If I absolutely positively had to have the 3rd down pass caught I would have to go to Biletnekoff. That guy, stickum or not, did everything he could to make the catch and he did.

All great receivers - Lionel Taylor was Biletnikoff with better hands (despite no stickum) but inferior speed

Moose. I'm not sure whether I agree or disagree...granted Aikman didn't put up huge numbers in any given year, but he did play within the system, distribute the ball well, throw with unerring accuracy AND lead his team to 3 Super Bowl Championships.

As I said, Irvin was a great player before Smith or Aikman.

I'm sorry, LGO, but this statement is redundant.

This is why I had my follow up statement, "Isn't that a requirement?".

Rice, and no one comes close...
of active players, do you really believe Moss has a chance to be up there when he's done?

i think moss is more physically talented/gifted than rice ever was. (and I will ALWAYS be unbelievably reverent of rice, trust me).

thus i think moss could end up being the greatest receiver of all time.

whether he does is probably up to him.
