1) The Redsox released Jose Offerman and designated P Willie Banks for assignment, to make room on the roster for Cliff Floyd and Bobby Howry.

After -15 RCAA/.713 OPS and -7 RCAA/.716 OPS the past 2 years, Offerman's off to a .325 OBA, .325 SLG, .650 OPS, -13 RCAA start in his first 72 games. He has a .734 career OPS, compared to his league average of .764, and -16 RCAA in 1459 games.

Banks is off to a 3.00 ERA/4 RSAA start in his first 18 games and has a 4.79 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.25, and -37 RSAA in 170 games.

2) Tests on Rangers RF Juan Gonzalez's hand showed he has a strained ligament and he could be headed back to the DL.

After 5 RCAA/.842 OPS and 38 RCAA/.960 OPS the past 2 years, the probable future Baseball Immortal is off to a .451 SLG, .324 OBA, .776 OPS, -8 RCAA start in his first 70 games. He has a .907 career OPS, compared to his league average of .762, and 268 RCAA in 1573 games.

3) Expos C Michael Barrett returned to the lineup, after missing 6 games due to a bruised forearm.

After -26 RCAA/.565 OPS and -32 RCAA/.655 OPS the past 2 years, Barrett's off to a .429 SLG, .348 OBA, .777 OPS, -3 RCAA start in his first 77 games. He has a .702 career OPS, compared to his league average of .784, and -71 RCAA in 432 games.

4) Dave Burba became a free agent, after he cleared waivers.

5) The Royals sent Ps Kris Wilson and Jeff Austin to the minors, activated P Jeremy Affeldt from the DL, and sent C Juan Brito the minors, after he cleared waivers. Brito had been removed from the roster when he was designated for assignment last weekend.

After 4.19 ERA/4 RSAA and 5.19 ERA/-3 RSAA in his first 2 major league seasons, Wilson's off to a 4.72 ERA/1 RSAA start in his first 8 games.

After a 5.54 ERA/-2 RSAA as a 24 year old rookie in 2001, Austin's off to a 4.91 ERA/1 RSAA start in his first 10 games.

Affeldt, a 23 year old rookie, is off to a 4.47 ERA/5 RSAA start in his first 14 major league games (7 starts).

6) The Cardinals called up P Kevin Joseph and sent P Travis Smith to the minors.

Smith, a 29 year old rookie is off to a 7.17 ERA/-19 RSAA start in his first 12 games (10 starts).

Joseph, who turned 26 yesterday, came into the year with a 4.63 ERA in minor league seasons and is off to a 1.99 ERA start in AAA this year.

7) Phillies P Robert Person will have arthroscopic shoulder surgery and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

After 3.63 ERA/22 RSAA and 4.19 ERA/2 RSAA the past 2 years, Person had a 5.44 ERA/-16 RSAA in 16 starts. He has a 4.60 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.46, and -22 RSAA in 199 games.

8) Cubs 1B Fred McGriff was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to a bruised left ribcage.

9) The Angels activated C Bengie Molina from the DL and designated INF Jose Nieves for assignment.

After -17 RCAA/.739 OPS and -18 RCAA/.660 OPS seasons in his first 2 years as a starter, Molina's off to a .332 SLG, .289 OBA, .621 OPS, -11 RCAA start in his first 77 games.

After -17 RCAA/.600 OPS and -2 RCAA/.751 OPS the past 2 years, Nieves is off to a .309 SLG, .303 OBA, .612 OPS, -5 RCAA start in his first 45 games. He has a .627 career OPS, compared to his league average of .787, and -40 RCAA in 212 games (573 PA).

10) The Whitesox called up P Mike Porzio.

After a 8.59 ERA/-4 RSAA in 16 games as a 26 year old rookie with the 1999 Rockies, Porzio's off to a 7.36 ERA/-4 RSAA start in his first 10 games and has a 4.91 ERA in AAA.

11) The Pirates activated P Ryan Vogelsong from the DL and sent him to the minors and moved P David Williams from the 15 to the 60 day DL.

12) The Cubs activated C Joe Girardi from the DL.

13) The Indians activated 3B Travis Fryman from the DL and sent OF Ben Broussard to the minors.

Fryman's having his 3rd double digit negative RCAA in the past 4 years, hitting .359 SLG, .311 OBA, .669 OPS, -13 RCAA in his first 83 games. He has a .782 career OPS, compared to his league average of .762, and 23 RCAA in 1663 games.

14) The Rockies sent Ben Petrick to the minors and are expected to call up OF Jack Cust today.

After -1 and -11 RCAA the past 2 years, Petrick's off to a .296 SLG, .211 OBA, .506 OPS, -8 RCAA start in his first 27 games. He has -17 RCAA in 603 career PA.

Cust, 24, is a highly touted prospect who came into the year with a 1.002 OPS (.445 OBA, .557 SLG) in 5 minor league seasons and is off to a .931 OPS (.407 OBA, .524 SLG) start in AAA this year. He was given a B+ grade by the Minor League Scouting Notebook, which listed him as an honorable mention on their top 50 prospect list. Cust is considered a defensive liability whose future could be as an AL DH and he could find it hard to break into the Rockies's load up on quantity, but not quality, outfield (Larry Walker notwithstanding).

15) Tigers minor league INF David Espinosa has back spasms that could end his season. Espinosa was acquired from the Reds in the Brian Moehler trade and GM Dave Dombrowski said the Tigers knew he was having problems, but don't consider this is a major problem.

16) Darren Lewis provided the Pirates with the best news they've gotten in a while when he decided to retire, rather than show off his run costing talents in Pittsburgh.
