I propose that all trades during the season be banned.
I propose that the only way a player can be moved from a team during the season is either on waivers, or between the minors and majors. The only help you can get is through your farm system or through some free agent you can find in the middle of the season, or through a waiver pick. Would this not end the idea of "buying" a pennant? College teams and High School Teams can't trade during the season. Why should the pros? If the reserve clause were in effect, I might not be advocating this. It is a bit revolutionary. What do you all think? |

You know, I'm all for this. The idea that only a few teams each year are playing for anything is just appalling to me. When I was a kid, if my team was 50-60, I'd still watch the rest of the year, because I'd hope they'd finish .500 or something. In effect, teams are now saying there's no reason to come to any more games this year, because there's no point in trying to win.

Although i can see the benefits of your proposal, I would vote against it. The real problem is the ever widening revenue distribution.

Yeah, no trades works so well for football. This proposal may be the goofiest one I've seen yet and perpetuates the idea of small market and large market and that revenue differential matters. Like ERA as a performance measure, I guess market size is a tough one to let go of, but let go .... no such thing as market size.

Trades and the trade deadline increase my interest in baseball.
Now, if we're talking about "buying" players, I would vote to ban that during the season, but would allow it in the offseason. |

with some editing Cubfan33 says 'size does not matter' On the serious side, if you eliminated in season trades you would seriously detract from the excitement of the pennant races, IMO. |

Simply, 162 games. While your team may be 12 out on 8/1, if they sign a LHP and a stud 1B they MIGHT make up the ground. And if they didn't you MIGHT be mad that WGN is showing Cubs games instead of Jerry Springer! ![]() |

Trades are a big part of the fun, in season or out. Who is going where, who might be going where, who might be traded for who.
No way I want to give that up. |

I like trades. It may make it easier for some teams to win than others, but it adds something to the game. I like the excitement of the trade deadline. Teams that are buying a pennant do most of the shopping well before the season starts. Let's fix that, not change this.

Say your second baseman breaks his leg in July, and you're in a pennant race. You don't have a major-league-ready prospect in the minors. What do you do, if you can't trade? Ride your non-hitting backup?

I would say that this would hurt small market teams worse than large market teams like the Yankees. The Yankees would then stockpile talent at each position. Small market teams who are struggling wouldn't be able to trade their marketable players for help and wouldn't be able to build for the future.
