6) Barry Bonds watch--hit #596, is 4 away from 600, is 159 away from Aaron's record

Bonds returned to the lineup for the first time since July 19. He seemed to aggravate his hamstring while chasing a fly ball in the 8th and was able to bat in the 9th--at least he was able to stand there while he was intentionally walked.

7) Ron Gant tied Jim Thome for 87th place on the all time HR list, with 313.

8) Mark Kotsay hit his 50th career HR.

1) The Rangers traded OF Gabe Kapler and minor league OF-INF Jason Romano to the Rockies for OF Todd Hollandsworth and P Dennys Reyes.

After 2 RCAA/.833 OPS and 6 RCAA/.785 OPS the past 2 years, Kapler's dropped to .332 SLG, .285 OBA, .617 OPS, -14 RCAA in his first 72 games. The formerly hyped prospect has a .767 career OPS, compared to his league average of .778, and -16 RCAA in 459 games. He's forgotten to hit a single HR this year, but the air in Colorado should help him remember to hit some.

Romano, a 23 year old rookie, is off to a .278 SLG, .254 OBA, .532 OPS, -4 RCAA start in his first 29 major league games. He came into the year with a .755 OPS (.348 OBA, .407 SLG) in 5 minor league seasons and is off to a .712 OPS (.329 OBA, .383 SLG) start in 48 games in AAA this year.

After -9 and 15 RCAA the past 2 years, Hollandsworth's off to a -4 RCAA start in his first 95 games. He has a .780 career OPS, compared to his league average of .774, and 5 RCAA in 708 games.

After 4.53 ERA/2 RSAA and 4.92 ERA/-4 RSAA with the Reds the past 2 years, Reyes is off to a 3 RSAA start in his first 43 games. He has a 4.32 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.36, and 2 RSAA in 238 games.

2) The Mets traded CF Jay Payton, P Mark Corey and minor league OF Robert Stratton to the Rockies for P John Thomson and OF Mark Little.

After -5 RCAA/.778 OPS and -16 RCAA/.669 OPS the past 2 years, Payton's off to a .415 SLG, .336 OBA, .750 OPS, 0 RCAA start in his first 87 games. He has a .735 career OPS, compared to his league average of .782, and -23 RCAA in 368 games.

Thomson had a combined figure of 0 RSAA the past 2 years, posting -14 and 14 figures. This year, he's off to a 0 RSAA start in his first 21 starts and has 16 RSAA in his 102 game career.

After 3 RCAA in 51 games as a 28 year old rookie in 2001, Little's off to a .286 SLG, .311 OBA, .597 OPS, -8 RCAA start in his first 61 games.

Stratton, 24, came into the year with a .843 OPS (.334 OBA, .509 SLG) in 6 minor league seasons, including a .827 OPS (.332 OBA, .495 SLG) in AA in 2001. He's off to a .817 OPS (.305 SLG, .512 SLG) start in AAA this year.

Corey, a 27 year old rookie, is off to a 4.50 ERA/-1 RSAA start in 12 games (he also pitched 2 in the majors last year).

3) The Whitesox traded P Bobby Howry to the Redsox for minor league Ps Franklin Francisco and Byeong Hak An.

After 3.17 ERA/16 RSAA and 4.69 ERA/-1 RSAA the past 2 years, Howry is off to a 3.91 ERA/5 RSAA start in his first 47 games. He has a 3.74 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.70, and 38 RSAA in 294 games.

In A ball, Francisco had a 2.55 ERA in 16 games (10 starts) and An had a 5.33 ERA in 25 games (12 starts).

4) The Brewers traded OF Alex Ochoa and minor league C Sal Fasano to the Angels for C Jorge Fabregas and a couple of players to be named later.

After 12 RCAA/.964 OPS and -19 RCAA/.737 OPS the past 2 years, Ochoa's off to a .381 SLG, .357 OBA,. 739 OPS, 0 RCAA start in his first 85 games. The once hyped prospect has a .763 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and -18 RCAA in 770 games.

Fasano has a .691 career OPS, compared to his league average of .783, and -29 RCAA in 252 games and hasn't played in the majors this year.

After -6 RCAA/.693 OPS and -15 RCAA/.553 OPS the past 2 years, Fabregas is off to a .205 SLG, .245 OBA, .449 OPS, -9 RCAA start in his first 35 games. He had a negative RCAA in each of his 8 previous seasons, with 6 double digit negative figures. Fabregas has a .602 career OPS, compared to his league average of .778, and -126 RCAA in 616 games.

5) The Padres traded Ps Steve Reed and Jason Middlebrook to the Mets for minor leaguers Ps Bobby Jones, the lefthanded version, and Josh Reynolds and OF Jay Bay.

After 3.48 ERA/3 RSAA and 3.55 ERA/6 RSAA the past 2 years, Reed is off to a 1.98 ERA/8 RSAA start in his first 40 games. He's working on his 11th consecutive positive RSAA and has a 3.58 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.32, and 100 RSAA in 647 games.

Reed is one of just 7 pitchers to have 100+ career RSAA and never start a game--

Middlebrook, a 27 year old rookie who also had 4 games of major league experience in 2001, is off to a 5.09 ERA/-6 RSAA start in his first 12 games (2 starts).

After missing the entire 2001 season due to an injury, Jones is off to a 5.29 ERA/-3 RSAA start in 12 games. He has a 5.75 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.38, and -10 RSAA in 92 games.

In A ball, Reynolds is off to a 3.13 ERA start and Bay has a .800 OPS (.363 OBA, .437 SLG).

6) The Pirates traded CF Chad Hermansen to the Cubs for CF Darren Lewis.

Hermansen, another formerly hyped prospect, is off to a .381 SLG, .272 OBA, .654 OPS, -13 RCAA start in his first 65 games and has a .597 OPS (.341 SLG, .257 OBA) and -34 RCAA in 139 games over the past 4 years.

After -19 RCAA/.612 OPS and -6 RCAA/.692 OPS the past 2 years, Lewis is off to a .304 SLG, .326 OBA, .630 OPS, -4 RCAA start in his first 58 games. He's working on his 11th consecutive negative RCAA and has a .645 career OPS, compared to his league average of .764, and -156 RCAA in 1353 games.

7) Cubs LF Moises Alou had to leave yesterday's game, due to tightness in his right calf, and is day to day, while P Carlos Zambrano had to leave, due to soreness in his upper arm, and isn't expected to miss his next start.

8) Redsox 1B Tony Clark missed yesterday's game, after fouling a ball off his foot on back to back days. X-rays were negative.

After 3 RCAA/.878 OPS and 15 RCAA/.856 OPS the past 2 years, Clark's having the worst year of his career, hitting .316 SLG, .266 OBA, .581 OPS, -18 RCAA in his first 65 games. He has a .837 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and 51 RCAA in 837 games.

9) A's 2B Ray Durham was out of yesterday's lineup, after scraping his leg while sliding on Tuesday.

10) The Expos called up OF Matt Cepicky.

11) The Tigers sent P Terry Pearson to the minors

Pearson, a 30 year old rookie, is off to a 10.50 ERA/-4 RSAA start in his first 4 major league games.

12) BlueJays SS Dave Berg was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to tightness in his shoulder.

After -7 RCAA/.683 OPS and -9 RCAA/.655 OPS the past 2 years, Berg's off to a .386 SLG, .307 OBA, 693 OPS, -7 RCAA start in his first 72 games. He has a .711 career OPS, compared to his league average of .780, and -19 RCAA in 426 games.

13) The Mets activated utilityman Joe McEwing from the DL, sent 2B Marcos Scutaro and P Satoru Komiyama to the minors, called up P Mike Bacsik before yesterday's game and sent him right back to the minors afterwards, moved Ps John Franco and Kane Davis from the 15 to the 60 day DL, called up 1B Jorge Toca and placed him on the 60 day DL and claimed minor league 2B Oscar Salazar off waivers from the Tigers.

McEwing's working on his 3rd double digit negative RCAA in his 4 year career, hitting .305 SLG, .224 OBA, .529 OPS, -10 RCAA in his first 67 games. He has a .705 career OPS, compared to his league average of .787, and -34 RCAA in 432 games.

14) Expos 1B Wil Cordero left yesterday's game, due to a cramp in his left calf muscle.

After -9 RCAA/.792 OPS and -13 RCAA/.656 OPS the past 2 years, Cordero's off to a .409 SLG, .315 OBA, .724 OPS, -1 RCAA start in his first 51 games. He has a .760 career OPS, compared to his league average of .769, and -34 RCAA in 1040 games.

15) The Rockies called up P Victor Santos.

Santos has a 3.30 ERA/10 RSAA in 33 games as a 24 year old rookie with the 2001 Tigers and is off to a 5.72 ERA start in AAA.

16) The Reds sent P Chris Reitsma to the minors and activated P Gabe White from the DL.

After a 5.29 ERA/-20 RSAA as a 23 year old rookie in 2001, Reitsma's off to a 3.41 ERA/14 RSAA start in his first 21 games (19 starts). While he is 2nd on the team in RSAA, if unearned runs are factored in, he drops to a slight negative figure.

After 2.36 ERA/36 RSAA and 6.25 ERA/-7 RSAA the pat 2 years, White's off to a 2.72 ERA/9 RSAA start in his first 49 games. He has a 4.28 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.36, and 30 RSAA in 343 games.

17) The Orioles activated Chris Richard from the DL and sent SS Brian Roberts to the minors.

And this time, they mean it.

18) The Indians called up P Carl Sadler.

Sadler, 25, came into the year with a 3.98 ERA in 5 minor league seasons, including a 6.50 ERA in a third of a season in AA in 2001, his first time at that level. He was off to a 2.33 ERA start in 21 games in AA this year before being promoted to AAA, where he had 1.93 ERA in 12 games.

19) The Royals will call up P Runelvys Hernandez before today's game, which he will start. Hernandez will take Darrell May's spot in the rotation, with May going to the bullpen.

Hernandez had a 3.75 ERA/2 RSAA in 2 starts earlier in the year.

May, who's pitching in the majors for the first time since 1997, has a 5.44 ERA/0 RSAA in his first 18 games (15 starts) and has a 5.83 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.52, and -12 RSAA in 59 games.

20) Lee Maye died on June 17, at the age of 67.

Maye played for the Braves, Astros, Indians, Senators and Whitesox, from 1959-71, and had a .733 career OPS, compared to his league average of .715, and 55 RCAA in 1288 games.

21) The Cubs sent C Mike Mahoney to the minors and are expected to activate C Joe Girardi from the DL.

Mahoney's a 29 year old with just 10 games of major league experience--4 in 2000 and 6 this year.

After -9 RCAA/.714 OPS and -9 RCAA/.660 OPS the past 2 years, Girardi's off to a .295 SLG, .275 OBA, .570 OPS, -12 RCAA start in his first 55 games. He has a .670 career OPS, compared to his league average of .762, and -217 RCAA in 1226 games.

22) Randy Johnson struck out 15 batters and recorded his 180th career double digit SO game. He's 2nd to Nolan Ryan (215) on that list.

Bonds' injury shows how tough and enduring 600 HRs is.

I predicted that Mark McGwire would retire before 600. People thought I was silly, but, as it turned out, he didn't even pass F. Robby.

Obviously, I think Bonds will get 600. But he's hardly an automatic to catch Ruth or Aaron (or even Mays). He has a slightly better chance of growing old overnight, with no explicable reason.
