The debates about Ozzie Smith, Luis Aparicio, Alan Trammell, et al has made me wonder about the next potential hall of fame active shortstop.
Question 1 Will Barry Larkin make the hall? Question 2 Does he deserve to? |

I am on record with this already, but yes to both questions. Barry both has the credentials to be elected to the Hall (.290+ career average, over 180 home runs, over 360 steals, Gold Gloves, an MVP) and will be elected. He was the best SS in the NL for several years.

Yes and Yes
The forum has changed my opinion in this case. I had thought he might have difficulty getting in

I've long believed that Barry Larkin has been a hall of famer...there was no one even close to Barry's skill as an all-around shortstop in the National League during his time, the next best SS was that hall of fame guy that played in Saint Lou, and we of course know what his forte was.
He easily fills the HOF requirement for prolonged excellence at a position (and is helped by the relative lack of super-shortstops in the NL)...the only question about Larkin is what style of Reds cap will be on his plaque. ![]() |

Larkin should be in, first ballot, no question. He's the greatest NL shortstop since Wagner, and I'm not convinced any of the Big Three other than A-Rod is appreciably better than Larkin.

I went No and Yes. I believe Barry will have difficulty getting in unless he has at least two more fine seasons.
He absolutely belongs in the Hall of Fame, but the BBWAA doesn't always recognize it. Look at Gary Carter! Hell, I think Tim Raines will have trouble getting in right away. |

I'm still undecided on Larkin, but Carter and Raines should have no trouble. The writers won't see it that way. Hopefully Carter can get in next year. |

I think Larkin will get in and probably deserves to. He is very fortunate that his career is winding down when it did. If he was five years younger he would be lost in the glare of the big three and Tejada.

I would say yes. It would be tough to keep Larkin out. Larkin was better in his prime than Cal Ripken but just couldn't stay healthy enough to be a superstar.
He has the stats but for some reason doesn't seem like a HOF. He wasn't flashy and his last five seasons have been injury plauged. If Larkin is kept out than there will be a lot of other ss/2b that are kept out too. |
