I cannot see how this guy can be the 1B on a true contender.
The Twins will go nowhere in the postseason with Doug Mientkiewicz at 1B, stellar glovework and all. He's hitting .247 with only 3 HRs. He has a .375 OBP, so he has some offensive value, but he only slugs .350. The Twins need more power at this power position. They can do this by picking up players who can form a platoon combination with Mientkiewicz. They need power from 1B, or they could slump so bad that they could bring the 1964 Phillies to mind. |

Since there is no chance the Twins will add payroll to pick up a top first basemen like Thome or Palmeiro, they might as well keep him this year. Maybe he can improve, or after the season some other team will make a bad trade for him since he's hypes as a good player.

What about picking up an outfielder who could serve as a platoon partner. A RH hitter to be a left/right or glove/stick platoon? |

Using Kielty, Mohr, LeCroy, and Cuddyer should be enough - IF - Gardenhire uses them to spell Dougie M. at 1B...no need to spend money Mr. Burns, I mean, Pohlad.

My fiancee would be devastated if they replaced him at first. We picked our partial season tix seats because he plays there. Seriously, if he is that good defensively, they could consider moving him to second base and rent a big stick like Thome (which would serve two purposes--a better hitter at first and he absolutely kills the Twins)....... by the way, Fuzzy Bear, the Twins did slump last year in a manner that would have made the '64 Phillies proud......

Yes, that is how you spell it.
Oh, that wasn't the question? While replacing Mientkiewicz with, say LeCroy in the lineup would probably be a step ahead, to break up a contending team at this point in the year would likely shake their confidence, and lead to worse results, not better. |

Chemistry lessons from the physics professor...at least you're still in the physical science building sweaver.
![]() I agree wholeheartedly. The Twinkies are much better off getting LeCroy, Ortiz, and Cuddyer in the lineup against "good" pitching (and giving Doug the day off). Dougie is an asset even when he's not hitting so they should try to get the boys on the bench involved. |

Given they have Justin Morneau, super-prospect, coming along in the near future, I think the Twins are unlikely to make any serious effort to keep him.

With the strike coming there isn't any point in keeping him if you a replacement on the way.

We all know what happened last year when the Twins got rid of an offensive cog in Matt Lawton...while this issue would be benching an offensive cog instead of trading him, there's a lot to be said for team chemistry.
Minky won't be deat, simple as that. Maybe you give more playing time to some big boppers like LeCroy, but he's still the regular...and as long as that familiarity is in place, the Twins will do well, regardless of his statistical success. |

I don't think it's fair to call Doug M, 2002 version, an offensive 'cog', though. Lawton was the Twins top OBP guy last year (prob their 3rd best hitter after Koskie and Minky). But Minky has been awful this year:
