1) The Marlins traded P Ryan Dempster to the Reds for OF Juan Encarnacion, utilityman Wilton Guerrero and minor league P Ryan Snare. The Reds also called up OF Raul Gonzalez and 3B Brandon Larson and sent P Luke Hudson to the minors.

A 3.66 ERA/20 RSAA season in 2000, in which he also finished 4th in the league in SO, put Dempster on the list of the best young pitchers in baseball. But, he's struggled the past 2 years, with a 4.94 ERA/-18 RSAA in 2001 and 4.79 ERA/-4 RSAA in his first 18 games. His recent struggles notwithstanding, at the price the Reds are paying, this is an excellent gamble to try to see if he can regain that potential.

Encarnacion's first 3 years as a major league starter produced .736 OPS/-23 RCAA, .764 OPS/-6 RCAA and .700 OPS/-15 RCAA seasons, with the Tigers, before being traded to the Reds for Dmitri Young during the offseason. He's off to a .474 SLG, .330 OBA, .804 OPS, 0 RCAA start in his first 83 games. An average major leaguer may be the best case scenario for this former hyped prospect.

Snare, 23, was the Reds's 2nd round pick in the 2000 draft and had a 3.05 ERA in A ball in 2001, his first year as a pro. He was off to a 3.07 ERA start in Hi-A ball, before being recently promoted to AA, and was given a C+ grade by the Minor League Scouting Notebook.

2) The Marlins traded LF Cliff Floyd, Guerrero, minor league P Claudio Vargas and about $1.5 million to the Expos for Ps Carl Pavano and Graeme Lloyd, INF Mike Mordecai, minor league P Justin Wayne and a player to be named later.

After 31 RCAA.906 OPS and 53 RCAA/.968 OPS seasons the past 2 years, Floyd's off to an excellent .537 SLG, .414 OBA, .952 OPS, 31 RCAA start in his first 84 games. He has a .853 career OPS, compared to his league average of .774, and 122 RCAA in 893 games. Floyd, who started his career with the Expos, from 1993-96, leaves the Marlins as their career leaders in AVG (.294), 2B (167), EBH (286) and R (392).

After -13 RCAA/.727 OPS and -17 RCAA/.638 OPS seasons in 1999-2000, Guerrero had what was probably a career year, with a 1 RCAA/.760 OPS, in 2001. It's never a good sign with a player is barely above average and that could have been his career year. He's off to a .282 SLG, .298 OBA, .580 OPS, -6 RCAA start in his first 59 games (89 PA) and has a .691 career OPS, compared to his league average of .778, and -47 RCAA in 610 games.

Vargas, 23, came into the year with 3.82 ERA in 4 minor league seasons, including a 4.19 ERA in AA in 2001, and is off to a 6.72 ERA start in AAA this year. He was given a B- grade by the MLSN.

After a 17 RSAA/3.06 ERA season as a 24 year old in 2000, Pavano fell to 6.33 ERA/-8 RSAA in 2001 and is off to a 6.30 ERA/-16 RSAA start in his first 15 games (14 starts) this year.

There is a big difference between the Reds hoping a change of scenario turns Dempster around and the Marlins hoping the same for Pavano. Even in his productive 2000 season, Pavano had a rate of 5.94 SO/9 IP, which was under the league average of 6.75. That raises a red flag, as young pitchers do not develop well when they are under that league average. Add in his persistent injury problems over the past few years and he's not such a good risk.

Lloyd thought he had a no trade clause to Expos, but that was blown when his agent failed to file the correct paperwork on time. In the past 3 years in which he's pitched, the 35 year old has been declining (he missed the entire 2000 season)--

Code:
YEAR ERA RSAA SO/9 IP 1998 1.67 12 4.78 1999 3.62 10 5.88 2001 4.35 2 5.63 2002 5.87 -5 4.99

After 0 RCAA/.785 OPS and -9 RCAA/.727 OPS seasons the past 2 years, Mordecai's off to a .257 SLG, .289 OBA, .546 OPS, -7 RCAA start in his first 55 games. He has a .678 career OPS, compared to his league average of .778, and -50 RCAA in 619 games.

Wayne, 23, was the 5th overall pick in the 2000 draft. In 2001, his first full professional year, he had a 3.02 ERA in 7 starts in Hi-A ball and 2.62 ERA in 14 starts in AA. He's off to a 2.37 ERA start in AA in 2001, was given a B grade by the MLSN and there is speculation he could be a late season callup.

The player to be named later is supposed to be a high pick from the 2001 draft, with the speculation centering on 1st rounder Josh Karp, who was the #6 overall pick, and 2nd rounder Dan Levinski. Both are pitchers.

3) According to Marlins president David Samson, "This is not a fire sale by any stretch. This is making moves given the realities of the position of our players. ... The payroll did not go down. The definition of a fire sale is to put your bottom line in a position to cut losses. This does not do this at all."

These trades may not put them in a position to cut losses, in the profit margin, but it puts them in good position to cut wins, in the standings.

4) The Indians fired MGR Charlie Manuel and named Joel Skinner as interim manager.

Skinner's father, Bob, managed the 1968-69 Phillies and 1 game with the 1977 Padres. They join George and Dick Sisler as the only father-son manager combinations in MLB history.

5) The Padres are expected to activate Phil Nevin from the DL today.

After 30 RCAA/.916 OPS and 51 RCAA/.976 OPS seasons the past 2 years, Nevin's off to a .449 SLG, .352 OBA, .801 OPS, 7 RCAA start in his first 39 games. He has a .844 career OPS, compared to his league average of .783, and 74 RCAA in 712 games.

6) Indians 1B Jim Thome has been out of the lineup for the past 3 games, due to a sore back.

Thome's having another excellent season, with a .604 SLG, .417 OBA, 1.021 OPS, 35 RCAA start in his first 83 games. The very strong Baseball Immortals candidate has a .969 career OPS, compared to his league average of .774, and 433 RCAA in 1313 games.

7) Indians RF Matt Lawton had to leave yesterday's game, due to a strained left calf.

After 22 RCAA/.865 OPS and 14 RCAA/.797 OPS seasons the past 2 years, Lawton's dropped to a .410 SLG, .351 OBA, .760 OPS, -3 RCAA start in his first 81 games. He has a .798 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and 45 RCAA in 900 games.

8) The Tigers activated OF Bobby Higginson from the DL and placed 1B Dmitri Young and 3B Chris Truby on the 15 day DL, and called up P Fernando Rodney

After 42 RCAA/.915 OPS and 15 RCAA/.813 OPS seasons the past 2 years, Higginson's off to a .443 SLG, .353 OBA, .846 OPS, 9 RCAA start in his first 56 games. He has a .846 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and 134 RCAA in 1028 games.

After -10 RCAA/.772 OPS and -7 RCAA/.717 OPS seasons with the Astros, in his first 2 major league seasons, Truby's off to a .366 SLG, .264 OBA, .631 OPS, -10 RCAA start in 73 games--the first 35 with the Expos. His placement on the DL is retroactive to July 4 and Shane Halter is expected to take over the 3B spot.

After -4 RCAA/.837 OPS and 3 RCAA/.832 OPS seasons the past 2 years, Young's off to a .458 SLG, .329 OBA, .786 OPS, -1 RCAA start in his first 54 games. He has a .816 career OPS, compared to his league average of .778, and 9 RCAA in 745 games. Young has been bothered by a hernia for about the whole season and will have surgery that will keep him out for at 6 weeks. But, even if we survive a work stoppage and there is baseball, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Tigers just shut him down and not bother with a September return.

9) The Rangers placed P John Rocker on the 15 day DL, sent C Todd Greene to the minors, after he cleared waivers, designated newly acquired INF Donnie Sadler for assignment, activated LF Rusty Greer and P Rich Rodriguez from the DL and called up OF Ruben Rivera.

Rocker has shoulder inflammation. After 2.89 ERA/10 RSAA and 4.32 ERA/1 RSAA seasons the past 2 years, Rocker's off to a 6.66 ERA/-4 RSAA start in his first 30 games. He has a 3.40 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.49, and 30 RSAA in 278 games.

After -5 RCAA/.713 OPS and -9 RCAA/.521 OPS seasons the past 2 years, Greene's off to a .424 SLG, .246 OBA, .671 OPS, -5 RCAA start in his first 25 games. It's the 5th consecutive time he's had an OBA under .300, and the 6th time in his 7 year career, while he has a .687 career OPS, compared to his league average of .780, and -43 RCAA in 283 games.

Greer has been declining over the past few years--

Code:
YEAR SLG OBA OPS RCAA 1999 .493 .405 .898 28 2000 .459 .377 .837 5 2001 .453 .342 .795 2 2002 .377 .345 .733 -3

After 7.78 ERA/-14 RSAA and 4.15 ERA/2 RSAA seasons the past 2 years, Rodriguez's off to a very small sample size 16.20 ERA/-2 RSAA in his first 4 games, covering just 1 2/3 IP. He has a 3.81 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.07, and 15 RSAA in 574 games.

Rivera has a .715 career OPS, compared to his league average of .789, and -37 RCAA in 563 games with the Yankees, Padres and Reds and made his 2002 debut yesterday.

10) The Royals designated P Cory Bailey for assignment and called up P Ryan Bukvich.

All Bailey has done over the past 2 seasons has been to tie Jason Grimsley for the team relief lead with 19 RSAA, including 8 in a team leading 57 appearances this year. His 31/24 SO/BB rate this year leaves much to be desired, but by making him the one who is just dumped from the roster, the team is saying that everyone else is more desirable than him.

On the other hand, we're talking about Royals management, so why expect logical reasoning.

Bukvich, 24, came into the year with a 2.16 ERA in 2 minor league seasons, with 60 of his 67 games coming below AA. He had a 1.41 ERA in 21 games in AA and 0.00 in 12 in AAA this year and was given a C+ grade by the MLSN.

11) The Devil Rays activated P Ryan Rupe from the DL and placed 3B Russ Johnson on the restricted list.

After 6.92 ERA/-20 RSAA and 6.59 ERA/-34 RSAA seasons the past 2 years, Rupe's off to a 5.54 ERA/-6 RSAA start in his first 14 starts. He has a 5.83 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.68, and -56 RSAA in 84 games.

Johnson left the team last weekend due to "personal reasons" and GM Chuck LaMar says he doesn't know when Johnson will return.

What exactly is it that LaMar does know?

12) The Diamondbacks activated 3B Matt Williams from the DL and sent INF Alex Cintron to the minors.

Williams has had a negative RSAA 4 times in the past 5 years, including -14 RCAA/.746 OPS and -11 RCAA/.780 OPS in the past 2 years. He made his 2002 debut yesterday and has a .807 career OPS, compared to his league average of .751, and 61 RCAA in 1763 games.

13) The Indians sent utilityman Jolbert Cabrera to the minors and activated P Jake Westbrook from the DL.

After -13 RCAA/.605 OPS and -11 RCAA/.660 OPS seasons in his first 2 years in the majors, Cabrera's having a terrible year. In addition to having to recover from his gunshot wounds, and whatever after effects that has inflicted into his life, he has a .125 SLG, .177 OBA, .302 OBA, -12 RCAA start in his first 38 games. Cabrera has a .582 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and -40 RCAA in 310 games.

Westbrook had a 5.85 ERA/-9 RSAA in 23 games (6 starts) as a 23 year old rookie in 2001, along with 3 games (2 starts) with the 2000 Yankees and hasn't made his 2002 debut yet.

14) The Indians traded minor league P Nerio Rodriguez to the Cardinals for minor league SS Neil Simoneaux.

15) The Angels activated C Shawn Wooten from the DL and sent P Matt Wise to the minors.

Wooten had a .466 SLG, .332 OBA, .798 OPS, 1 RCAA season as a 28 year old rookie in 2001 and made his 2002 debut yesterday.

Wise had a 3.68 ERA/1 RSAA in his first 6 games.

1) According to the Boston Herald, the Redsox are talking to the Indians about Jim Thome and Chuck Finley. Meanwhile, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Cardinals are trying to acquire Finley.

2) According to the LA Times, the Dodgers are interested in Rangers 2B Frank Catalanotto, Brewers 3B Tyler Houston and Cubs 3B Bill Mueller.

3) According to the Seattle Times, the Mariners are expected to try to acquire another starting pitcher, with Al Leiter, Chuck Finley, Scott Erickson and Sidney Ponson as possibilities.

4) Astros 2B Craig Biggio missed yesterday's game, due to sickness, while RF Richard Hidalgo was out of the lineup, due to a sore wrist. Hidalgo appeared as a defensive replacement and they are both day to day.

5) The Phillies claimed minor league P Brian Reith off waivers from the Reds.

6) The Yankees claimed minor league P Seth Etherton off waivers from the Reds and moved P Christian Parker from the 15 to the 60 day DL, to make room on the 40 man roster.

7) The Redsox activated 2B Rey Sanchez from the DL and sent P Sun Woo Kim to the minors.

After -37 RCAA/.637 OPS and -36 RCAA/.637 OPS seasons the past 2 years, Sanchez is off to a .427 SLG, .345 OBA, .772 OPS, 3 RCAA start in his first 47 games. This would be the first time in his 11 year career that he's had a positive RCAA and just the 3 time he's avoided a double digit negative figure. Sanchez has a .653 career OPS, compared to his league average of .766, and -197 RCAA in 1214 games.

After a 5.83 ERA/-6 RSAA in 20 games as a 23 year old rookie in 2001, Kim's off to a 7.45 ERA/-9 RSAA start in his first 15 games.

8) The BlueJays activated SS Chris Woodward from the DL and sent OF Pedro Swann to the minors.

Woodward's off to a small sample size fluke .919 OPS/4 RCAA start in his first 24 games. He has a .668 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and -14 RCAA in 112 games over the past 4 years.

Swann was 0 for 5, with 3 SO, in 4 games.

9) The Phillies sent P Jose Santiago to the minors, after he cleared waivers. He had already been removed from the roster when he was designated for assignment over the weekend.

10) Angels 2B Benji Gil had to leave yesterday's game, due to cramping in his right side, and is day to day.

After -18 RCAA/.807 OPS and -2 RCAA/.767 OPS seasons the past 2 years, Gil's off to a .457 SLG, .310 OBA, .767 OPS, 2 RCAA start in his first 27 games. He's never had a positive RCAA and has a .651 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and -85 RCAA in 508 games.

11) Barry Bonds was given a routine day off yesterday.

I love giving his stats--.780 SLG, .562 OBA (on pace for a major league record), 1.342 OPS, 87 RCAA in 82 games.

12) Royals SS prospect Angel Berroa, who was acquired in the Johnny Damon trade, is actually 24, instead of 22. Meanwhile, P Runelvys Hernandez, who is regarded as one of their top prospects, is actually 23, instead of 21.

13) Yankees 1B Jason Giambi reached 250 career doubles.

After 102 RCAA/1.123 OPS and 105 RCAA/1.137 OPS seasons the past 2 years, Giambi's off to a .604 SLG, .434 OBA, 1.038 OPS, 38 RCAA start in his first 87 games. He has a .964 career OPS, compared to his league average of .778, and 362 RCAA in 1040 games.

14) Woody Williams is listed as the Cardinals projected starter for tonight, but it sounds like it's more likely that he's going to go on the DL.

15) MLB is now backing down from their somebody will fold on Monday story.

According to UTK, the team involved was the Devil Rays. There is also speculation that the Tigers were the one.

Time for some credibility assessment--Will says it's the Devil Rays. Among those saying it's the Tigers are Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay.

While I can't comment on the credibility of everyone who reports it's the Devil Rays, in battle of credibility between those two sources, it's Will by a first round KO, 11 seconds into the match. Add to the mix everything we already know about how the Devil Rays have been run and it becomes very easy to believe they were the one in question. Of course, that's not to say the Tigers have been run well, either.

16) According to UTK, the Padres are concerned that Ray Lankford's hamstring injury is a season ender.
