Acutually I thought Gosford Park was a good as or better than Memento. Both are excelently crafted films, and have superb acting, writing, and direction. I guess I liked Gosford Park better, but that's just my opinion. For those of you who have not seen Gosford Park, keep in mind that the first part of the film may move a little slow, and it has a very large cast. It will be a little tough to keep tack of everyone at first. If ever there were tow movies that you can watch more the once, it's these two. I can't say the same for Vanilla Sky.

I lean towards Memento, but it's tough to say anything negative about Gosford Park. It was a crime to give Ron Howard the Oscar over Altman. Actually, I thought Ridley Scott was also a good candidate for Black Hawk Down, which I felt was an excellent film with great direction.

Gosford park was a very good film. I like Robert Altman and I thought he did a good job in casting the different roles. It was an interesting study of British society in the early 1900s. It's not everyone's cup of tea I guess .

My only complaint was that I couldn't understand a word that Emily Watson said! She had a very thick accent and I missed a lot of the dialouge.

I went into Gosford Park blindly and was looking for a "Clue"-esque film (i.e. Maggie Smith in the conservatory with the lead pipe), so it was much to my chagrin during the better part of the first half when it wasn't what I expected. I did not know that the main point of the film was the observation of different "classes" of people within one house and their dealings with one another.

Had I known that going in, I would've enjoyed the innerworkings of the atmosphere and acting more. But instead I'm getting agitated waiting for someone to take one in the head or be poisoned or what-not.

Memento made for a clever movie. Even more so the additional times I viewed it at home on PPV. Once you know the story, you can then watch it again and focus on catching little "pieces" throughout.

I put Vanilla Sky in the same category as Magnolia: strange.

Is it possible to think a movie's direction, acting, cinematography, and theme were first-rate, but still not quite like the film? This would be my reaction to Gosford Park. Many of the characters seemed under-utilized or undeveloped. There were several outstanding actors in the cast who got very brief treatment.

Definitely. While I likedGosford Park, I've had the same feeling you're describing about other movies in the past. I think some people felt that way last year about Black Hawk Down as well (my personal favorite movie of the year).

I felt that way a few years ago about "As Good As It Gets". Nicholson was good, helen hunt Ok, kinnear good, lots of good scenes but the whole movie just didn't work for me.

I could see how you could feel that way about Gosford Park. It was more of a tour than a story.

Yes - it focused very much on the theme, perhaps more so than on the story.

Plot is not always central to a film. In this one's case I felt it worked having not focused in on the plot. Alot of what is good about this film is the way it focuses on the life of the manor and the people who inhabit this world. Like any good film this one has several layers.

Memento was a very good film, one of the best from last year. I haven't yet seen Gosford Park, so I can't compare them.

Me too. I loved that movie - a throwback to old-fashioned suspenseful ghost stories.

no, 'the others' refers to a title of a single movie, so it should be The Others was....

Sorry moose, but gyb are actually correct here.

I really liked Memento, but I know some people that couldn't stand it. Too perplexing, I guess.
