Don't know the answer... trying to find out.
Reason for the question is... what would happen if a manager was fired before the all star game? would he still manage the all star game? if so what uniform would he wear??? certainly not of the team that fired him! even if he was with another team already... that's not the team that went to the world series. just curious how that would all work out, and if it's ever happened before eric http://www.digitalballparks.com |

Jim Frey was fired in 1981 after leading the Royals to the World Series in 1980. I can't remember whether it was before or after the ASG.
BTW, it is great to ask questions, but in the Trivia area you must know the answer. This post should be in the History section.

I just checked it was after the ASG so it is a moot point for Frey.

Well it figures that Billy Martin and the Yankees would be involved in this scenario.
In June of 1979 Bob Lemon was fired as Yankee manager after leading the pinstripes to the WS championship in 1978. Lemon was replaced by Billy Martin. Martin also took Lemon's place as the ASG AL manager. The irony of all this, of course, is that Martin had been fired in August of 1978 and replaced by Lemon.

There's Berra-Keane in 1964. I think Yogi was fired and Keane quit, and was hired by the Yankees.

thanks all!
so i guess KC has the answer to the question... who manages... and since bob lemon did.. then the managerial spot in the all star game follows the team and not the individual manager... it is pretty ironic that lemon replaced martin who replaced lemon! thanks k.c.! |

After the 1964 season Yogi Berra of the Al Champion Yankees was fired. Johnny Keane resigned as manager of the Cardinals after leading them to the WS titles. The Yanks then hired Keane. All of this occurred prior to the start of the 1965 season.
Somehow someway the ASG managers ended up being Al Lopez of the White Sox and Gene Mauch of the Phillies. So, no the ASG managerial gig is not given to whoever is managing the league champion at the time of the ASG. I think in this odd-ball case the managers of the second place teams were used. I don't believe there is any rule of succession on this. I think the league presidents or commissioner just comes up with a new decision everytime it happens.

Darrell Johnson didn't survive 1976 after taking the Sox to the Series in '75. However, he didn't get the ax until after the ASG.

The Steinbrenner Yankees were involved in this sort of thing a lot.
Before the 1982 All-Star game, Bob Lemon was fired after leading NY to the WS the previous year. So the AL's manager that game was...Billy Martin, manager of the Oakland A's, the defending AL West division champs. |
