Forget Giuliani, I may have a new NYC hero ... a source gave me some info that George Steinbrenner may be preparing a lawsuit against MLB in order to stop revenue sharing. Several UTK readers have said that the YES announcers have been more and more vocal about baseball NOT losing money. The big threat of the lawsuit to baseball wouldn't be losing, it would be the same thing that saved Minnesota - the threat of having to open their books.
I've been waiting for a dissident owner to step up. Since Steinbrenner is a lightning rod, I was hoping it would be Magowan or Daly or the M's Japanese owner, but I'll take what I can get.

"Bud was close to making him eligible right after his meeting with Pete (November 2002). Right after that, Pete got into tax trouble (in California), and that delayed the process." - Phillies Chairman Bill Giles in the Dayton Daily News, January 25th, 2004. |

So, is Bud's "gag order" fine structure $1MM per incident or per topic?
I guess we'll find out. King George is, for obvious reasons, the last guy who would want revenue sharing. It would be sooooooooo interesting to get the "counter-point" to Selig's doom-and-gloom stories. It will be easy for Selig to dismiss just about anything Steinbrenner says as the "haves" trying to protect the status-quo. But, as we have often speculated on NDF, the owners can't all be walking lock-step if the commissioner needs to threaten them with a fine if they talk out of school (and, one would assume, not follow the company line.). With reservation, I say, "Go get 'em George." |

Since all Yankee fans believe that the Yankees are baseball they are "correct" in believing baseball is not losing money.

Steinbrenner vs. Selig - If this were a duel, I'd hope that they eliminated each other, freeing us from both of them.
Don't get me wrong. Steinbrenner is a great owner if you're a Yankees fan, but for the rest of us, we'd like to see a return to their previous ownership and to some lean years in New York. |

selig said on pardon the interruption yesterday that it wasn't a "gag order." rather, he had become "tired" of owners "firing shots across the bow" of the MLBPA, and wanted it to stop.

Steinbrenner for Commish? Two words: Hell no. The last thing we need is MORE Yankee world titles, because you know the Boss is going to do everything in his power to get them to them...
Commissioner Steinbrenner would make me MISS Selig... |

The sad thing is, Steinbrenner was the one that moved to extend Selig's contract at the last owner's meeting.
Big Stein should've said something then.

I'd love to see Steinbrenner take a contrarian stance; the pressing question then becomes - is anyone standing behind him? He would need a small-market owner to conteract the backlash TimmyB spells out (the "haves" argument). The other "large market" owners are not going to stand with him; Hicks in TEX, Henry in BOS, the Tribune in CHI, FOX in LA, Ninetendo in SEA, whoever owns the NYM, would ALL benefit from a revised financial system. For several years, those teams tried to match the spending of NYY only to fall short and find themselves in the red.
I see Steinbrenner as the lone wolf, trying desperately to maintain his control of the pack, yet knowing that his time has come and the pack is about to do him in... Unlimited and unchecked spending only benefits one franchise: The Yanquis. A revised financial system with a cap, floor, and revenue sharing benefits 24-26 franchises. The needs of the many outweigh the needs (or the wants) of the one.... |

Steinbrenner Number of playoff appearances in these 12 seasons: 0. It's not Steinbrenner's money that wins the pennants (any more than Peter Angelos' money loses the pennants): it's how the money is spent. Yes, it helps to have more (and, incidentally, play in the largest media market), but the best recipe for building a dynasty is a strong scouting system, player development system and shrewd management.

From Ohio - all Seinbrenner is guilty of is using his resources to their fullest capacity. It's his job to oversee a franchise that wins as many games as it can, and as a businessman, doing it while not losing money if possible.
Seriously... who can blame him for opposing revenue sharing? It's not his job to usher in a new love of baseball for the 21st century. It's not his job to create a new baseball renaissance. It's his job to make sure the NY's win. He would be doing a disservice to the NY's fans to do anything BUT oppose revenue sharing. |
