I was just musing about his (after a few Bad Elmer Porters...mmmm...)
All of the various fans here really circle the wagons, for the most part, when someone disparages the team, a player on the team, or even pokes a bit at the name of the team in a clever way. Meanwhile, Cubs fans just really don't care, or so it seems. Blast 'em? Yeah, they deserve it. Call the players out? Sure, they're all bums. Spit 1908 in their face? We do it louder and faster. Call 'em the Flubs, Scrubs, or something even more creative? Sure, why not? Say our fans are drunken yuppies more interested in sun tans and drinking beer? Yeah, we say it too, because we want their seats. Why is it so? Why don't we circle the wagons? Is it because we're resigned to futility? Why do other fans get into a defensive pose so readily? Inquiring minds want to know! |

I agree - Cub fans are a breed apart - they appreciate the game itself, something that most fans are incapable of doing (particularly in LA, NY and Philadelphia). Red Sox fans are probably as close as it gets elsewhere.

Maybe it can be attributed to my theory of lowered expectations; after this many years, this many bad years, the expectation is that the Cubs will lose. When they do lose, it is no big deal - Cub fans knew they would lose beforehand so they cannot be as disappointed as they would have been with higer expectations. But if they win...ooh boy, the Cub fans catch fire, hoping and praying it won't end but knowing it will, because it's the Cubs, and they always lose, right?
When there is a reason for hope, it triggers a cycle of brief accomplishment, followed by years of teasing, followed by years of decline, followed by years of desolation, followed by brief accomplishment... I think it appropriate to mention this theory was developed through years of being a NE Patriots football fan. So there is hope for the Cubbies yet... ![]() |

A key difference is that there is a separate "set" of Cub "fans" who claim to be Cub fans but wouldn't know Mark Bellhorn from Corey Patterson. They like to go to Wrigely Field and booze it in the sun. By in large these folks accept the lovable loser label. I think the die hards are like any other fans. But they save most of their energy to disparage White Sox fans.

Actually, most of the die-hards I've met on the net are cynical folks that are now jumping for joy with the ousting of Dandy Don... They have contempt for the Sox, contempt for the drunken yuppies, contempt for the Tribune...you get the idea.... |

No Romey, because Cub fans have contempt for our team as well. Red Sox fan and Yankee fan circle the wagons (Hey, don't youse talk about them...). Meanwhile, we encourage the "pile on"....

The only other fans that I can think of that would deprecate their own team were Brooklyn fans. Dem Bums. Dose Bums. The difference was that no one else was allowed to abuse the Dodgers. If you were a Giants or a (gasp) Yankee fan and insulted the Dodgers, get ready to throw down.
You never know Cub fans, the shine may shine on you again some day. Or not. ![]()

You want to see contempt for a team, check into Boston around August or September. When the Red Sox fall out of a pennant race, no one is less forgiving than their fans...no one. And ANYONE can bash the Red Sox when that happens EXCEPT Yanqui fans. ![]() I sat with 3 Cub fans last September at Fenway (making their first pilgramage) and they were amazed at the harsh booing and contemptous behavior of the Red Sox fans towards the team and several players in particular. "I've never seen any home team get booed like this," said one of the Cub faithful. I told them to make their next visit in May if possible. |

Sorry, Philadelphia invented contemptuous fans and treating the home team crudely.
Who's by far the greatest player in franchise history? Mike Schmidt. What player was booed more by Philadelphia fans than any other player? Mike Schmidt. I don't think you can find another case of where this is true (Musial, Ruth, Aaron, Mays, Clemente, Banks, etc.) |

Contrary to all the rosy tributes of the past 24 hours, no superstar was booed more lustily by his home fans than Ted Williams. In past years, he has become beloved - but back in the day, the "front-runners" in Boston would spew invective all over The Kid; and he's literally spit it back at them.
