Bob Nightengale reports that Cliff Floyd is expected to go to the Red Sox before 7/31.
Where do they play him? What would they give in exchange? How in Boston losing PT as a result?

I have read this too. It is a way to jack up the price. Floyd is going to the Yanks, everyone knows that.
The only way it would work is if Nixon was part of the deal. Nixon is on Beans hit list. I think we could get more value with a trade to Oakland. The Sox will have to be happy with the team as is. We have little to trade. Free spending days are over with the new ownership...I hope. Win today and morgage the future did not work well for the Sox. We are paying the price now. So let's ride the horses that brought us here.

I don't think the 'Floyd-to-the-Sox' rumors are all smoke and no fire. I attended a Red Sox-Marlins spring training game shortly after the ownerhip transfer, and observed John Henry and Cliff Floyd chatting and actually goofing around with each other. Floyd made some kind of statement after the sale of the Marlins about how well Henry had treated him and the team, and how he (Floyd) was sad to see him go. Henry made a similar statement about how Floyd was one of his favorite players. Having observed JH, it would not be out of the realm of possibility that he has a personal relationship with Floyd - and that personal relationship may help to facilitate a trade.
That being said, everyone knows the Sox farm system is drier than the Mojave. Trot Nixon seems to be mentioned everytime something like this comes up. So does Casey Fossum. Would Fossum and Nixon be enough for the Marlins? Probably, as the Marlins could use a lefty starter (who couldn't?) and Nixon is certainly a cheaper long term alternative than Floyd in RF. But that's not a good deal for the Sox, so unless it costs less than that (and I can't imagine how) then please JH, just say no. If the owner MUST have Floyd, let's just sign him as a FA after the season when all it costs is money, not talent. I agree with HMRSF that any deal for Floyd probably costs too much and doesn't return enough 'parts' for Nixon. I've heard the OAK rumors too (they need a CF and coincidentally, Nixon's been playing CF the last two days) and the return from OAK is much more appealing. If Carlos Pena and Adam Piatt (and a pitcher, probably Cory Lidle) can be had from OAK for Nixon and a RP (Wayne Gomes?) I would be unable to turn that down or criticize the deal, as you the Sox would get younger, cheaper, and more competitive as a result. |

I'm appalled, am I too understand there is a rent-a-player out there that King George isn't going to buy. What is this world coming too when the Yankees can't just pony up more of the money they practically print from the YES Network and outbid everyone else. George is going to have to fix that.

Actually, I heard one of the prime reasons the Yankees went ahead with the Mondesi deal was because they were almost certain Floyd wouldn't be going to Boston.

Floyd in that lineup would terrify me as a Yankee fan (even if Nixon was part of the deal)

The Cliff Floyd sweepstakes are officially in full swing. According to ESPN the contestants are Atlanta, Boston, Montreal, and San Francisco. All could use the extra bat in their line up. I think the least likely would be the Braves. I think the Marlins would would not want to send a good player to a division rival. Since there is not supposed to Les Expos next year, Montreal may be a deal. Add in the fact that the Marlins would get more prospects. The Giants and Sox both have merits. Neither team has that much in their respective minor league systems, but the Giants have more than the Sox. Remember the trading deadline is a little over three weeks away.

Source in Florida is telling me that Cliff Floyd won't make it through the weekend IF Montreal can get approval to take on 500k in salary.
The deal will be as follows: Montreal gets: Cliff Floyd, Ryan Dempster Florida gets: Carl Pavano, Grame Lloyd, Josh Karp, and Justin Wayne. I don't know much about the Expo prospects, but who'd have thought the Expos would be making as much trade noise as the Yanks?

I hope this deal happens for the Expos, but once again we're privvy to the IDIOCY of a team having to go to Bud Selig and ask for permission to increase payroll.
Dempster is Canadian, right? Bringing him in and getting Cliffy a return will likely boost the attendance by a few dozen per game (an improvement of several percentage points). Just think if the Expos had managed to get Eric Gagne instead of Matt Herges. And bring back Denis Boucher!!! I doubt the Expos will make the playoffs, but they could win 85+ games and be the best non-playoff team. And they'll still be contracted. The fish stinks...from the head.

Karp and Wayne are two good pitching prospects.
Still, you would think that Floyd and a SP would get more - - unless Floyd is a FA to be?

Selig is dispersing all of Montreal's best prospects in exchange for players who will be free agents.

With the Yankees no longer showing an interest, Cliff Floyd could be heading back to a team he didn't expect. The Sun-Sentinel reported Saturday that the Marlins outfielder could be traded to the Expos, the team whom he spent his first six professional seasons. ---- go Montreal! If it is going to be the last season there you have to love that they are going down swinging |
