They're pretty close. I'd take Santo. I think he was a better offensive player and just a little worse defensively. I wouldn't believe anyone who told me one was much better than the other.

Brooks was the best gloveman of his era, and though Santo won a few Gold Gloves, he wasn't quite in Robinson's sphere. But, Santo's offense made up for the difference.

Santo. His offense was just too superior to Brooks for the defensive differences to matter.

Brooks Robinson - from 1959 to 1971 Brooksie was a pretty decent offensive player (before and after those years, his glove sustained him as a big leaguer)

Tough call, but I'd go with Brooks. I believe that most of the difference between the two offensively was a result of parks, Santo hit 216 of 342 homers at home, and probably picked up some points in batting average, while Brooks hit 137 at home, 131 on the road.

Defensively, Brooks was the best or damn near the best of all time, and I think Santo was just a good fielder. So you have very good hitter vs. good hitter, great fielder vs. good fielder. Gotta give Brooks the edge in longevity, and he had a reputation, perhaps deserved, of being a great clutch hitter...he did hit .303 in nine postseason series...need we mention his defense in those series?

The homer in me says Santo, and since he never got to the series, it's not fair to trot out the postseason stats....not Santo's fault Leo Durocher choked and didn't rest anyone...

Wouldn't hold it against Santo for not making series, it's simply another positive for Brooksie.

Bill James ranks it Santo 6, Robinson 7 among all-time 3B.

I'll vote Brooks, but am willing to admit an Orioles bias.

Quite a horse-race, so far. Brooks, as I see it, by a nose. (But, I wouldn't have a fit if Santo ended up in the Hall.)

Brooks actually reminds me of Fisk in a way. Great Series moment(s) added to a very, very good career. Could have been viewed as a bubble candidate otherwise. Santo never had a defining moment and was often overshadowed on his own team.

Of course, you could also make the argument that Brooks wasn't even the best guy named "Robinson" on the O's, much less the best player on the team.

Oh dear... this is very confusing...
