Default Atlanta Hawks guarantee

Saw an article today where the Atlanta Hawks are guaranteeing that they'll make the playoffs, and if they don't their season ticket holders will get a $125 rebate. Now that isn't much when you consider that the price for a season ticket runs from $1,000-$3500, but it's a marketing ploy that could draw some gullible customers in for a team that went 33-49 last season.

It got me to wondering though if a MLB team could try the same tactic, but then when I thought of how the small market teams peddle their product, there's no way they could get this kind of marketing campaign past Bud Selig. After all, small market teams don't have a chance at making the playoffs in MLB, right?

Just another example of how baseball's marketing geniuses have focused their campaign on all the things that are WRONG with the game.

Sal, you're right that the offer is nothing more than a marketing ploy, but I think it might work. For some reason, people love rebates or cash-back offers. That's why the car companies do it all the time, and it's not surprising that it's making it to sports marketing.
