Default UTK@Fox and Draft News

The weekly UTK @ Fox is up for your perusal at FOXSports.com. Be sure
to check it out as well as some great stuff from Bootleg Sports and
the other fine baseball coverage.

BOBBY BROWNLIE is in the clear and should be drafted high tomorrow.
Brownlie is by acclimation the best college pitcher in tomorrow's
draft, but has been dogged by concerns about his arm since mid-
season. Jim Callis, one of the draft gods at Baseball America and a
friend of UTK, has reported that Brownlie's recent MRI shows nothing
worse than biceps tendonitis and a bruise on his humerus. I still
think that Brownlie goes to the Expos at #5, but I advise you to
check out Jim's excellent coverage.

There's no major injury problems in the elite levels of the draft
unless you consider PRINCE FIELDER's weight a medical issue. If I'm
the Tigers, I take him. You can check out my picks of the top ten -
and believe me, I'm no authority - over at Netshrine.com.

Quick injury news ...

RICH "EL GUAPO" GARCES went on the DL today after admitting he had
eaten a Saab ... wait, no, admitting he had been pitching with a bum
hamstring. The injury explains his pitching woes of late, but why
didn't he tell someone? Someone in Boston has to get serious about
turning their medical program around.

SHAWN WOOTEN had a setback in his rehab, pulling a muscle in his
back. It should add a week to his return date.

JASON JOHNSON will return to the O's rotation later this week.
Johnson has missed several weeks after a freak workout accident
broke his middle finger.

The Dodgers have chosen to be cautious with KEVIN BROWN. With OMAR
DAAL available to start, they will keep Brown on the shelf until
he's "100 percent." The only problem is Brown may never be 100%
again. I'll guess June 24th or so, depending on the rotation.

RICK ANKIEL's rehab will start slow. He'll pitch in relief for
Single A Peoria on Wednesday and move to Double A after a few
successful appearances. Dave Duncan announced that they would follow
the return plan they used with MATT MORRIS and use him only as a
reliever with the intention of having him in the rotation in 2003.
Very interesting ...

DAVID JUSTICE will be activated tomorrow and play DH, sharing at
bats with SCOTT HATTEBERG, who's hitting the cover off the ball.

Next report tomorrow.

"I was pulling for Pete and agreeing with (commissioner) Bud Selig that Pete should be eligible for the Hall of Fame," said Giles, now chairman of the Phillies. "Bud was close to making him eligible right after his meeting with Pete (November 2002). Right after that, Pete got into tax trouble (in California), and that delayed the process."
- Phillies Chairman Bill Giles in the Dayton Daily News, January 25th, 2004.

El Guapo is not hurt. He is going on the DL to find the 25-35 pounds he lost in the offseason. Once he gets to the bottom of that plate, he will be able to find home plate as well.
