Default Appearing in todays Daily Herald...

A few (edited) quotes:

The () have spent to keep their best players, something the () have a great history of not doing, and they have spent to acquire the final pieces of the puzzle - like trading for () and signing free agent ().

But unlike the (), who had just four home-grown players contribute this past season - ()- the () had 12 of their own draft choices playing and adding something to the effort.

() seems to indicate that because of his own mistakes in hiring, firing and signing, he doesn't need to spend money because it won't do any good.

Because of their commitment to winning, the () have sold out (a lot of) straight games, which over the last (many) years has been worth an extra $(lots) beyond what the () have earned, easily making up for the extra payroll.

Do you know what this is in reference to? Do you know what to fill into the blanks? I can only wish it was someone writing about baseball. Unfortunately, its about hockey (hence its inclusion in this forum).

Anyway, heres the link:

I had half the blanks right. I knew the Wings were the team being spoken of positively, but I thought the team being criticized was the Rangers. Chicago does make sense, though, when I think of their free-spending ways that never seem to lock players in for more than a couple of years.

Looking back at their draft choices, they really haven't had a good # 1 pick since Jeremy Roenick in 1988. Check out these picks:

Since getting a steal with Daze later in the '93 draft, they've done a horrid job. No wonder they end up having to sign free agents or trade draft picks. It looks like they need to hire a new scouting and player development group.
