Default the Devil made them do it

The Rays have demoted C Toby Hall and OF Jason Tyner.
This means Greg Vaughn shifts to LF, John Flaherty returns to being the primary C, and Aubrey Huff (called up) becomes the DH.

Do the D'Rays have any direction in the personnel moves they make? What will this change of heart do to the confidence of Hall?

Tyner is pretty much useless, and while Hall has been pretty bad, it's not like the D-Rays are involved in any kind of pennant race. John Flaherty and Greg Vaughn are decidedly not part of their future - I don't see why they don't just bring all their young playes up and let them play - regardless of results.

Demoting Hall makes no sense for a team like Tampa Bay.

First, he's proven over the past couple of years that he can dominate minor league pitching. He's had a rough go of it so far at the major league level, but the only way he's going to get better is to face big league pitching.

Second, it can't hurt to continue playing him through his struggles, because it's not like he's keeping them from contending. They should play Hall thinking of the fact that his learning experience will benefit them over the next several years. Flaherty could be his backup and could serve as a mentor.

No wonder this team continues to flounder. Moves like this are assinine.

How do you know this move is asinine? Just because you don't like it? There may well be reasons we don't know about but could easily speculate on. It may well be that Hall has totally lost his confidence and needs to go back to the minors to restore it. Maybe he has decided he's a big leaguer forever and doesn't have to work. Maybe he has given up and is just going through the emotions.

I agree with the basic premise that you are better off playing your veteran's than has-been veterans.

Maybe they're trying to showcase Vaughn. What a disaster that team is. Although they have as good a chance to win the World Series as 25 other teams, so what's the difference?

OK, on the surface it looks like a bad move. You could be right in that they're trying to help him regain his confidence. If that's the case, then I'd expect him back soon. If they end up keeping him down there too long, I'll revert to my original opinion (which is, of course, all this is).

I think it's to get Hall back on track, and perhaps showcase Flaherty as well.

It wouldn't be to showcase him, because he has been playing. He's just shifting from DH to LF.

What if an NL team is interested, but wants to know if he can still play the field?

I believe that TB is giving out Tyner bobbleheads on Sunday. I wonder how embarassing that is to give out a bobblehead of a guy that just got demoted.
