1) Mets P John Franco has decided to have Tommy John surgery tomorrow.

2) Mets INF John Valentin had to leave yesterday's game, due to a strained shoulder.

Valentin's off to a .441 SLG, .351 OBA, .792 OPS, 1 RCAA start in his first 29 games. He has a .820 career OPS, compared to his league average of .771, and 59 RCAA in 1020 games.

3) Braves SS Rafael Furcal was out of yesterday's lineup, due to a sore shoulder, and was used as a pinch runner.

After a 8 RCAA/.776 OPS rookie season, Furcal fell to -9 RCAA/.691 OPS in 2001 and is off to a .351 SLG, .299 OBA, .650 OPS, -5 RCAA start in his first 39 games and is leading the NL with 124 outs.

4) The Marlins will activate P Josh Beckett from the DL before today's game, which he will start.

The highly regarded rookie is off to a 3.52 ERA/2 RSAA start in his first 5 starts.

5) Cubs LF Moises Alou returned to the lineup, after missing 3 games with a strained left hamstring.

6) Henry Rodriguez refused the Expos's assignment to the minors and became a free agent. He had already been removed from the roster when he was designated for assignment on May 8.

7) Reds 1B Sean Casey returned to the lineup, after missing 3 games with a strained right hamstring.

8) Brewers P Nick Neugebauer was scratched from his start yesterday, due to mild tendinitis in his shoulder. He may be able to make his next start, which would be Saturday.

9) Reds P Scott Sullivan had to leave yesterday's game, after being hit in the elbow by a ball.

Sullivan's had at least 12 RSAA 4 times in the past 5 years and is off to a 2.10 ERA/7 RSAA start in his first 24 games.

10) There was concern that Andres Galarraga's back pain could have a recurrence of his cancer, but tests showed he's cancer free.

11) Marlins RF Cliff Floyd had to leave yesterday's game, due to a bruised right knee.

After setting careers with 53 RCAA and .968 OPS in 2001, Floyd's off to an excellent start, hitting .664 SLG, .455 OBA, 1.119 OPS, 25 RCAA in his first 36 games. He has a .854 career OPS, compared to his league average of .775, and 116 RCAA in 845 games.

12) Twins P Brad Radke had to leave yesterday's game, due to a pulled right groin muscle, and he may have to miss his next start.

After a career high 35 RSAA season in 1999, Radke has declined in each of the past 2 seasons, but was still productive, producing 22 and 15 RSAA seasons. He's off to a 5.08 ERA/0 RSAA start in his first 9 starts.

13) The Rockies placed LF Benny Agbayani on the 15 day DL.

Agbayani has a strained left hamstring.

14) The Mets called up P Mark Corey and placed P Kane Davis on the 15 day DL.

Davis has a strained lower back. After a 8 RSAA season as a 26 year old rookie with the Rockies last year, Davis is off to a 7.07 ERA/-5 RSAA start in his first 16 games.

Corey, 27, had a 1.80 ERA in AAA and pitched 2 games in a cup of coffee callup last year.

15) The Cubs placed SS Alex Gonzalez on the 15 day DL, called up P Pat Mahomes and moved P Donovan Osborne from the 15 to the 60 day DL.

Gonzalez has a strained left hamstring. He's having a good year, by his bad standards, hitting .429 SLG, .325 OBA, .754 OPS, -1 RCAA in 32 games. Gonzalez has a .693 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and -153 RCAA in 922 games.

1) The Redsox concluded Manny Ramirez will not need surgery on his broken finger and he'll have a second opinion today.

2) The Royals designated DH-1B Dave McCarty for assignment and activated P Brian Shouse from the DL

McCarty's off to a .219 SLG,. 147 OBA, .366 OPS, -5 RCAA start in his first 13 games. He has a .663 career OPS, compared to his league average of .766, and -66 RCAA in 492 games.

Shouse, 33, is in what could be his first full year in the majors and is off to a 2.35 ERA/2 RSAA start in his first 11 games.

3) The Cardinals will activate P Garrett Stephenson from the DL before today's game and will activate Woody Williams from the DL before tomorrow's game.

4) The Padres are expected to place 1B Phil Nevin on the DL today or tomorrow, due to a sprained left elbow.

5) Cubs MGR Don Baylor says Mark Prior won't be called up this week.

6) A MRI on Rangers 1B Rafael Palmeiro's calf showed he has a significant strain, but no tear, while utilityman Frank Catalanotto had some improvement in his tight groin.

It's possible that one of them could end up on the DL, to get another healthy bat on the roster.

7) According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Twins want to send Jack Cressend to the minors, but he's out of options and they are afraid to lose him on waivers.

After a 3.67 ERA/5 RSAA season as a 26 year old rookie in 2001, Cressend's off to a 8.47 ERA/-6 RSAA start in his first 15 games.

8) The Indians are hoping Ellis Burks can play LF, when they don't have the DH available to them in NL parks, but MGR Charlie Manuel says Burks's strained hamstring will have to improve for that to occur.

9) In their 17-4 loss to the Astros, Phillies INF Tomas Perez became the first position player to pitch for the team since Glenn Wilson, in 1987.

10) Diamondbacks 1B Mark Grace had to leave yesterday's game, after fouling a ball off his right ankle, and is day to day.

Grace is off to a .400 SLG, .338 OBA, .738 OPS, 1 RCAA start in his first 37 games. He has a .832 career OPS, compared to his league average of .78, and 299 RCAA in 2092 games.

Don't think much of your Canseco selection. With your disparagement of the HoF selections I would have thought you would do better.

In the perfect world, everyone would have contempt for Baseball Immortals, just like I have contempt for Cooperstown. Everyone would think for themselves who belongs and nobody would attribute any signficance to anyone else's list.

Using the Baseball Immortals website to get information about a player that interests you or to use the many statistical charts that are located at the site are valid uses of the site. Using the membership list is a way to draw conclusions on the value of a player is bad and should be avoided at all cost.

Default Canseco's Qualifications

"A player had to play at least 10 years & be retired for at least 1 year, except active players become eligible when they reach 40. But, to be elected as an active
player, a player is held to a higher standard than a 1st ballot candidate."

I am a new user here and am still learning. However, I copied the above from the Immortals website. Seems like Jose' doesn't meet this criteria. How can he join now? Please explain. Thanks.

Welcome to the site, Domeboys.

Under that criteria, he doesn't qualify. But, I changed the criteria, to drop eligibility of active players and changed the retirement criteria to just be retired. I just forgot to change the information on the site.

While active players are no longer eligible, the active ones who have already been elected have been grandfathered in. Those players are Bonds, Henderson and Raines.

Default Ok, thanks

Gracias' Pedro, er Steve. Same to you, Lee. I figured Rickey and Rock were in as they are over 40, but didn't catch Bonds until you mentioned it. Another question, since the Cards/Reds game is not going well right now: Where is the definition of RCAA, so I can read up? I checked the FAQ, but didn't see it. Finally, thanks for your daily reports!

I have a page of definitions, at http://www.baseballimmortals.net/definitions.shtml

I wrote that after the 2000 season, so the exact numbers on the page don't reflect the latest season. Since the definitions are more important than the actual numbers, I haven't bothered to go change them.

Here's the RCAA definition--

RCAA--RCAA is a formula I created in the spring of 2000. It's the player's RC [runs created] figure minus the amount an average player, based on his league average and the player's home park, who used up the same amount of his team's outs would have created. A player can have a negative RCAA, which indicates he was below average.

In 2000, the league leaders were Carlos Delgado (104, the highest in the AL since Norm Cash's 115, in 1961) and Barry Bonds (89, the 7th time this all time great led the NL), while the worst figures in each league were posted by Neifi Perez (-54) and Royce Clayton (-38), while Mike Lansing also had -54, while spending time in both leagues.

It's also on the page of definitions here at Netshrine, but I'm not sure of the URL.
