Instead, the players may use the All-Star Game, which is notably in Milwaukee, as a final plea to fans or a way to make some dramatic act. ... UTK asked about the odds of a strike happening. "[I'm] not really sure. Better than 50-50. The way the dates line up, it will happen really fast. There's a lot of talking going on, but no one seems really hopeful." UnderTheKnife usually specializes in baseball injuries. Don't let my use of UTK for labor news distract you from its real purpose. I just can't stand writing about the topic myself. I strongly recommend subscribing to UTK's daily newsletter, by sending a blank message to UnderTheKnife-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

1) From an ESPN.com chat--
Chris (Cleveland): I've really enjoyed the Historical Abstract and Win Shares. One of the main problems I see with good research going forward in baseball, is that many of us don't have access to complete and accurate databases -- at least not without either money or a great deal of work. Any chance this is something you would invest some time in producing? Bill James: (4:15 PM ET ) Yeah, its kind of ironic to see statistics guys getting behind the curve in this area, given modern computers. I don't have any immediate plans. There is a very good product called the Sabermetric Encyclopedia, from a man named Lee Sinins. . .I have never met Mr. Sinins, but enjoy his product. The sabermetric baseball encyclopedia is available at http://www.baseball-encyclopedia.com 2) The Twins placed P Brad Radke on the 15 day DL and will call up P Mike Trombley and move P Joe Mays from the 15 to the 60 day DL today. Radke pulled a groin muscle on Monday. After4 consecutive years with a positive RSAA, Trombley fell to -3 in 2001. He has a 4.42 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.63, and 23 RSAA in 504 games. 3) The Cardinals sent P Travis Smith to the minors, to make room for Garrett Stephenson, who was activated from the DL and started yesterday. Today, they will sent P Bud Smith to the minors, when they activate P Woody Williams from the DL. 4) The Marlins sent P Gary Knotts to the minors, when they activated P Josh Beckett from the DL. 5) Whitesox RF Magglio Ordonez had to leave yesterday's game and underwent tests on his back. 6) Yankees P prospect Randy Keisler is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, after he was bit by a rattlesnake at his home. 7) Devil Rays P Delvin James was scratched from his start yesterday, due to shoulder stiffness, and was replaced by Travis Harper. 8) The BlueJays activated P Esteban Loiaza from the DL and sent P Mike Smith to the minors. After a career high 11 RSAA in 2000, Loiaza fell to -4 in 2001. He made his 2002 debut yesterday and has a 4.77 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.49, and -10 RSAA in 211 games. 9) The Tigers activated Dmitri Young from the DL and sent OF Craig Monroe to the minors. 10) The Redsox placed LF Manny Ramirez on the 15 day DL and called up OF-2B Bryant Nelson. 11) The Indians sent P Alex Herrera to the minors and called up OF Bruce Aven. Herrera was only called up to give the team an extra lefty in the pen while Ricardo Rincon returned to Mexico to attend his son's christianing. Rincon has rejoined the team. 12) Twins minor league 2B Warren Morris cleared waivers and was "sent" to AAA. Since Morris was already there, the only real practical effect was he's now off the 40 man roster. 13) Redsox RF Trot Nixon dropped his appeal of his 4 game suspension for flinging a bat at Devil Rays P Ryan Rupe. It is no coincidence that Nixon dropped the appal at the same time that he's expected to miss a few days, due to a viral infection. After a career high 29 RCAA in 2001, Nixon is off to a .459 SLG, .360 OBA, .819 OPS, 3 RCAA start in his first 34 games. 14) Mets INF John Valentin was diagnosed with a partial tear of his right rotator cuff and is expected to go on the DL today. 15) Tests on Diamondbacks 1B Mark Grace's right ankle showed he's badly bruised, but there's no broken bones. Grace fouled a pitch off the ankle on Monday.

1) The Rangers are hoping Rafael Palmeiro can return to the lineup on Friday. He has a strained right calf.
2) Indians 3B Travis Fryman had a MRI and a cortisone shot on his right shoulder. He was diagnosed with tendinitis in his biceps and is expected to miss 3-5 days. 3) The Rockies sent P Mike James to the minors, after he cleared waivers. He had already been removed from the roster when he was designated for assignment on May 6. 4) Dodgers LF Brian Jordan missed yesterday's game, due to a sore back. 5) A's 1B Carlos Pena was out of the lineup for 2 games and returned yesterday. Pena was rested after being a 2 for 26 slump and went 0 for 4 yesterday. He's having a typical slump that's nothing to worry about. The rookie is off to a .439 SLG, .313 OBA, .752 OPS, -1 RCAA start in his first 37 games. 6) Whitesox 2B Ray Durham missed yesterday's game, due to a sore hand, which he revealed has been bothering him for almost 3 weeks. Durham will see a specialist and is day to day. 7) Whitesox MGR Jerry Manuel says Tony Graffanino may be used in a Mark McLemore, play everyday, but without a specific position, role. 8) The BlueJays are expected to activate Shannon Stewart from the DL today.

Have you tried Baseball America? I think more stat geeks read that, if they read anything ink on paper. |

I think Baseball America would attract even less stat geeks. The magazine has an anti-stats, pro-tools/scouts approach to prospects and their useless Super Register and Prospect Handbook doesn't even contain the basic stats of OBA and SLG.

Fair enough assessment, but a lot of people used to get it for the minor league stats. With the internet now, I wonder if their circ. is down anyway.

Baseball America's online site was designed by someone on this board ... but I really miss a lot of the features since it went to a subscriber only format. I use the stats, I read Ask BA, and that's about it.
Have you considered (heck, do they even take em) ads in a SABR journal or selling it through STATS?

"Bud was close to making him eligible right after his meeting with Pete (November 2002). Right after that, Pete got into tax trouble (in California), and that delayed the process." - Phillies Chairman Bill Giles in the Dayton Daily News, January 25th, 2004. |
