How legit are Erubiel Durazo's chances at playing every day in Arizona's crowded lineup.
he was amazing in the spring till he got hurt, but now he's coming back. |

I keep hearing the rumors that Arizona is going to bench mark Grace when he comes back. You have to find a way to get Durazo's bat in the lineup.

Gammons keeps writing that Durazo goes into the lineup when he gets back at least 5 days a week, and Grace gets bench time. He says that was the plan for the start of the season until the injury.

Sweaver is getting the same info I am ... Grace is ticketed for the bench when Durazo is back. While I've heard talk of a trade for Grace to retire a Cub, it doesn't make much sense during the season. Durazo could also play a couple games in RF or DH during interleague play. Grace would also likely come in as a defensive replacement a bit earlier than most since he has some offensive value as well.

With the knowledge of Grace's real attitude, I wonder how sitting will set with him.

I have never believed that Arizona was really serious about giving Durazo a real shot at a steady job. They seem more content to let a geezer play and bring the kid off the bench.

Everybody seems to be ready to give up on Grace. He did have a .833 OPS last year and plays very good defense still. The D-backs would make a pretty good American league team. Rj wouldn't have to bat and they would have a space for Durazo.

There is nothing wrong with calling him Ruby...Ruby Durazo would probably be the way he'd be known as anyway if he played several decades ago. Besides, I'd often called him that myself.
(But does he get introduced with "Ruby Tuesday"? )Also, consider this is Bob Brenly, he's not right! ![]() Never the less...I hope Durazo makes Brenly look good for once...even though I'm a bigger Grace fan, I like Durazo (although admittedly, it's as much for Ruby's name as it is anything else. ) and I'd love to see him belt 30... |

Durazo was slipping to the status of a "Ken Phelps All-Star"; a guy who could be at least a quality regular, even a minor star, who was buried on the bench or in the minors behind a player who (a) already had the job, and/or (b) had "the reputation" of being "the starter". Durazo has been a better player than Grace for some time now, but Grace has the All-Star reputation
and the .307 lifetime BA, plus he gets the bucks, even now. It didn't used to be that way. I remember placing a post on George Kell. I noted that his career ended in his late-middle thirties because the O's has Brooks Robinson, and gave him the job. He was better. Kell retired. Today, Brooks would be sitting at Rochester until Kell's contract ran out, even if he was a better player now, or it would be better for the O's if Brooks played now. Grace needed to be on the bench last year, but he was "the great Mark Grace" with the big contract. I wonder how that decision would be viewed if the D'Backs hadn't won it all. |

I think he might have a shot at playing if he can keep up that pace. |

He might have a shot at Bonds at that pace.
![]() Of course, I'd just like to see Ruby hit 30. 30 HR's still means a lot in today's came, to Ruby it'd be proof that they wasted his ass on the bench for 3 seasons. ![]() |

Durazo had an awesome night & is a huge talent - However never underestimate Brenly's knack of sticking with a veteran despite all logic - I can definately see Brenly playing Grace 2 days a week & juggling his lineup to do that - I do think Grace should grab some pine & Durazo should play every day - Having Grace available as a PH in the late innings could only help & I think it is a role he would excel at - It kills me to say that as I am one of the biggest Mark Grace fans around(I still wear my #17 Cubs jersey to every game I go to)
