6) The Cubs called up 2B Bobby Hill and placed P Carlos Zambrano on the 15 day DL.

Hill, 24, is considered the Cubs top hitting prospect. He came into the year with a .876 OPS (.428 OBA, .458 SLG) in 2 minor league seasons, including a .788 OPS (.396 OBA, .392 SLG) in AA in 2001. He had a .738 OPS (.392 OBA, .346 SLG) so far this year in AAA and was given a B grade by the Minor League Scouting Notebook. He'll be given a shot at taking over the starting 2B job.

1) Angels RF Tim Salmon set the team record with his 527th career extra base hit, breaking the mark set by Brian Downing.

Code:
1 Tim Salmon 527 2 Brian Downing 526 3 Garret Anderson 419 4 Jim Fregosi 404 5 Bobby Grich 357 6 Chili Davis 329 7 Wally Joyner 304 T8 Doug DeCinces 294 T8 Jim Edmonds 294 10 Don Baylor 288

2) In their 19-0 win over the Whitesox, the Angels set team records for runs in a home game, breaking the mark of 18, which was done twice, and runs in a shutout win, breaking the mark of 17, which was also done twice. The Whitesox set a team record for most runs allowed in a shutout loss, breaking the mark of 17, done against the Orioles, on July 27, 1969.

3) Mets 3B Edgardo Alfonzo missed yesterday's game, due to a strained right biceps, and is expected to return today.

After 34 RCAA/.886 OPS and 56 RCAA/.967 OPS seasons in 1999-2000, Alfonzo fell to -4 RCAA/.725 OPS in 2001. He's off to a .353 SLG, .414 OBA, .767 OPS, 4 RCAA start in his first 35 games and has a .806 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and 99 RCAA in 986 games.

4) The Rockies called up INF Brent Butler and placed P Shawn Chacon on the 15 day DL.

Chacon has a strained pectoral muscle.

Butler's only expected to be up for the weekend, until the team calls up Dennis Stark to take Chacon spot in the rotation on Monday.

5) The Pirates activated OF Chad Hermansen from the DL and sent INF Abraham Nunez to the minors.

Hermansen was once a highly touted prospect, but the Pirates have excelled in losing interest in him when he didn't have immediate success in small sample sizes. He's just been given 242 PA in 3 years. Hermansen's out of options and if he has another small sample size bad start, don't be surprised to see him on the waiver wire.

6) The Dodgers called up P Jeff Williams and placed P Terry Mulholland on the 15 day DL, retroactive to May 4.

Mulholland has a strained lower back. After -8 and -3 RSAA seasons the past couple of years, Mulholland is off to a 10.80 ERA/-9 RSAA start in his first 7 games. His -72 career RSAA is a major league record for the worst figure by a pitcher who was permitted to pitch in 500+ games--

Code:
RSAA G 1 Terry Mulholland -72 517 2 Mark Davis -60 624 T3 Dan Spillner -57 556 T3 Pedro Ramos -57 582 5 Johnny Klippstein -48 711 T6 Woodie Fryman -44 625 T6 Jack Russell -44 557 8 Joe Niekro -42 702 9 Dave Giusti -36 668 10 Mike Morgan -34 581

Williams, who turns 30 next month, has a 6.61 career ERA and -12 RSAA in 27 games over the past 3 years.

7) The Braves sent P Tim Spooneybarger to the minors and will activate P Jason Marquis from the DL before today's game, which he will start.

Spooneybarger, a 22 year old rookie who is regarded as a good prospect, has a 3.50 ERA and 1 RSAA in his 19 games, but has shown control problems, with 11 BB in 18 IP.

After a 3.48 ERA/13 RSAA season in 2001, Marquis is off to a 6.75 ERA/-5 RSAA start in his first 3 starts.

8) The Padres called up P Jason Middlebrook and sent P Andy Shibilo to the minors.

Middlebrook, 26, had a 5.12 ERA and -2 RSAA in 4 games with the Padres last year and has a 5.13 ERA in AAA this year.

9) The Cardinals will replace Bud Smith in the rotation with Travis Smith, for Sunday's game.

10) The Marlins sent P Blaine Neal to the minors and will activate P Julian Tavarez from the DL before today's game, which he will start.

11) The Twins placed 3B Corey Koskie on the 15 day DL, retroactive to May 8, called up 3B Casey Blake and designated minor league 2B Warren Morris for assignment.

Koskie has a strained hamstring. After a career high 19 RCAA season in 2001, Koskie's off to an excellent .496 SLG, .418 OBA, .914 OPS, 8 RCAA start in his first 34 games.

Blake, 28, has 41 games of major league experience, with 3 teams, since 1999.

12) The Brewers sent P Brian Mallette to the minors, to make room on the 25 man roster for Everett Stull, who started yesterday.

13) The BlueJays released 2B Homer Bush.

He'll become a free agent on Tuesday, unless he's claimed off waivers.

14) The Indians sent 1B Earl Snyder to the minors and called up P Alex Herrera.

Herrera was called up from AA, just for a few days, to give the day another lefty in the bullpen. Ricardo Rincon will miss their entire series with the Royals, so he can attend a baptism in Mexico.

15) Rockies 3B Todd Zeile missed yesterday's game, to attend his godfather's funeral, and is expected to return today.

16) Royals P Chris George had to leave yesterday's game, due to a split nail on his middle finger.

After having a 5.59 ERA/-5 RSAA in 13 starts as a 21 year old rookie in 2001, George is off to a 4.07 ERA/3 RSAA start in his first 5 starts.

17) The Devil Rays released OF Brian Hunter, who was in AAA.

18) Devil LF Jason Tyner missed yesterday's game, due to a sore left knee, and is expected to return today.

After -14 RCAA seasons in each of his 2 years, Tyner's off to a terrible .235 SLG, .250 OBA, .485 OPS, -11 RCAA start in his first 33 games.
