Question Jeff Brantley - ESPN BB Tonight

This evening, for the 1st time ever, I saw/heard a little of Jeff Brantley on Baseball Tonight. I thought he did a pretty good job.

Anyone else have an opinion of him as a TV analyst?

I've heard him do games earlier in the season and thought he was a bit wooden and stiff, like Macfarlane.

He may grow into it. It's probably being uncomfortable at the mike.

I've seen him several times, and I like him. He's good at the "what the player is thinking/doing" type of analysis, without being over the top. By over the top I mean ridiculous assertions (Hello, Mr. Morgan) or going overboard with baseball minutiae.

That is to say that he explains things in a simple manner from a player's perspective, and is especially knowledgeable re: pitchers (duh).

By the way, he frequently adds some "when I faced this guy" stuff, usually in the understated manner that (I believe) makes such comments successful when others do it (most notably Harold Reynolds on BBT).

Finally, sometimes I have trouble concentrating on Brantley, since it looks like his neck is digesting a small person - perhaps Craig Counsell.

I am growing to like Brantley. He is not an accomplished public speaker or TV guy, but what he says makes sense.

He was on with Dibble the other night. Made for quite a contrast.

I picked up on that too - - thought he even gave Dibble a few looks as if to say "Dude, are you out of your mind?"

I believe I saw that as well. The old "Do you have the slightest idea what you are talking about" face.

Brantley has got to do something about his hair. God, it's awful.

From what I've heard of him so far, he's a pretty good analyst, but he does have what my brother calls a "radio face."

John Madden ain't too pretty and he's made himself a nice dime. I like Brantley's chances.

Yeah. He's better than Morgan, Har Reynolds and even Jon Miller. Miller and Morgan drive me NUTS on Sunday Night.

To quote Buddy Young (Mr. Saturday Night): "Don't get me started!"
