I was not great, as my name would suggest - even 'tho I pitched some in addition to hitting.

It was not my brother who hung around with Wayne - - 'tho I could see how it might be confusing.

I have something in common with two dead captains.

Who am I?

Is was working an Alexander the Great first, but then the 'Wayne' thing hit me. Once I got the Garth, and a little help from Lee's Baseball Encyclopedia for confirmation the Dane pitched, it was a piece of cake.
