1) The Padres called up P Dennis Tankersley and placed P Kevin Jarvis on the 15 day DL.
Tankersley, 23, is one of the highest rated pitching prospects in baseball. While he might only be only for a start or two this time around, most people expect him to be called up to stay by midseason. He came into the season with a 2.52 ERA in 3 minor league seasons, including a 2.07 ERA in 13 starts in AA in 2001, and he has a 2.64 ERA in AA this year. Tankersley was given an A- grade by the Minor League Scouting Notebook, which ranks him as the 6th best prospect in baseball and 2nd best pitching prospect, behind Josh Beckett. Tankersley was originally with the Redsox, before Dan Duquette decided Boston should the ones to suffer from -8 of Ed Sprague's -83 career RCAA. Jarvis has elbow problems. 2) The A's activated P Mark Mulder from the DL and sent P Mike Fyhrie to the minors. Mulder will return to the rotation today. After a 3.45 ERA/22 RSAA season in 2001, he's off to a 4.91 ERA/0 RSAA start in his first 3 starts of 2002. 3) Redsox SS Nomar Garciaparra was given a routine day off. Garciaparra's off to a .529 SLG, .354 OBA, .883 OPS, 5 RCAA start in his first 28 games. 4) The Rangers called up P Joaquin Benoit and sent P Randy Flores to the minors. Benoit was called up to make an emergency start and should be expected to be sent down. 5) The Astros placed P Hipolito Pichardo on the restricted list and called up OF Jason Lane. Pichardo has elbow problems and was placed on the restricted list, rather than the DL, since he says he's retiring. He said that last year, but then came back. If he really is through, he finishes with a 4.44 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.51, and 18 RSAA in 350 games. Lane, 25, came into the year with a .936 OPS (.386 OBA, .550 SLG) in 3 minor league seasons, including a 1.015 OPS (.407 OBA, .608 SLG) in AA in 2001. He was given a B+ grade by the Minor League Scouting Notebook, which made him an honorable mention selection to their top 50 prospect list. 6) The Brewers will call up P Everett Stull before today's game, which he will start. They moved P Paul Rigdon from the 15 to the 60 day DL, to make room for Stull on the 40 man roster, and they still have to make a move to get him on the 25 man roster. Stull, 29, had a 6.70 ERA and -12 RSAA in 24 games in 1997 and 1999-2000. 7) Mariners P Kazuhiro Sasaki left the team, to return to Japan to attend to some family business. While it's not a certainty when he'll return, the team is hoping he'll back for the start of a road trip that begins on Tuesday. After 9 and 7 RSAA in his first 2 seasons, Sasaki's off to a 0.00 ERA/7 RSAA start in his first 13 games. 8) Brewers P Ben Sheets had to leave yesterday's game, due to back spasms, and 1B-OF Matt Stairs had to leave, due to a strained left hamstring. Sheets says he's had back spasms before, but never this bad, while MGR Jerry Royster says it's not known yet whether Sheets will have to miss a start. After a 4.76 ERA/-6 RSAA season as a 22 year old rookie in 2001, he's off to a 4.57 ERA/-1 RSAA start in his first 8 starts in 2002. Stairs is off to a terrible start, hitting .242 SLG, .216 OBA, .459 OPS, -4 RCAA in 21 games. He has a .849 career OPS, compared to his league average of .780, and 83 RCAA in 839 games. 9) The Marlins moved into sole possession of first place. It's the first time in team history they do so after April. 10) A's P Barry Zito's new contract will be worth anywhere from $9.3 to $18.45 million, depending on whether IP escalator clauses are met and whether the team picks up the 2006 option. 11) According to the Toronto Star, the Mets could be interested in BlueJays P Dan Plesac. 12) Tigers 1B Dmitri Young's hernia may need surgery, which would keep him out for another 4-6 weeks. They had been hoping he could have returned from the DL in the past few days. 13) Twins 3B Corey Koskie will miss at least their weekend series against the Yankees and could go on the DL today. Koskie has a hamstring injury. 14) Dodgers RF Shawn Green missed yesterday's game, due to the combination of a bruise on his hand and facing a lefty, while he's expected to the lineup today. In the past 5 years, Green has had 2 excellent seasons: 48 RCAA/.972 OPS in 1999 and 61 RCAA/.970 OPS in 2001, to go along with 3 good years: 12 RCAA/.809 OPS (1997), 19 RCAA/.844 OPS (1998), 18 RCAA/.839 OPS (2000), and he has a .863 career OPS, compared to his league average of .781, and 153 RCAA in 1072 games. Green is off to a bad start in 2002, hitting .383 SLG, .326 OBA, .709 OPS, -5 RCAA in first 33 games. 15) Padres 3B Sean Burroughs was removed from yesterday's game, due to shoulder soreness, and could be out for a few days. The 21 year old rookie is off to a .330 SLG, .294 OBA, .624 OPS, -4 RCAA start in his first 27 games.

1) The Mariners orthopedic specialist examined Edgar Martinez and says, "He looks better, less tender, he's improving."
2) A cortisone injection in Ivan Rodriguez's back "didn't have the results we would have liked", so he had a second one. It will be another 10 days before it's known whether the second one was successful and he could need season ending surgery, if it's not. 3) Pirates 3B Aramis Ramirez is expected to return to the lineup tonight, after missing 18 games due to an ankle injury and "suspension", which merely prevented him from playing in games that his injury would have kept him out. He did make a couple of pinch hit appearances during that absence. After a 24 RCAA/.885 OPS in his first season as a starter, Ramirez is off to a .490 SLG, .404 OBA, .893 OPS, 3 RCAA start in his first 17 games. 4) Cubs SS Alex Gonzalez had to leave yesterday's game, due to a mild strain in his left hamstring. In the past 4 years, Gonzalez's RCAA has ranged from -26 to -32, except for a small sample size 0, in an injury plagued 1999 season. He's off to a .429 SLG, .325 OBA, .754 OPS, -1 RCAA start in his first 32 games. 5) Cubs LF Moises Alou had to leave yesterday's game, due to a sore hamstring, and is day to day. After 57, 38, 33 RCAA seasons, from 1998-2001 (he missed the entire 1999 season), Alou's off to a terrible .297 SLG, .221 OBA, .517 OPS, -8 RCAA in the sample size of 18 games. 6) Pirates SS Jack Wilson was given a day off yesterday. He's in an 0 for 22 slump. After having a bad minor league track record, Wilson had a -36 RCAA/.550 OPS season in 108 games as a 23 year old rookie in 2001. He's off to a terrible .250 SLG, .264 OBA, .513 OPS, -8 RCAA start in his first 26 games this year. Lee
