Default Hill's heeeeeeeere

At last, a day Cubs fans have been waiting for since the spring. How do you think he'll fare?

Cubs promote Hill, put Zambrano on DL
Quote:
Bobby Hill didn't take long to convince the Chicago Cubs he belonged in the big leagues. The Cubs purchased the rookie's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Friday, and he was at Wrigley Field and in the lineup for the afternoon game against the Milwaukee Brewers. "I got no sleep," Hill said. "My adrenaline is running pretty high right now and I'm just excited to be here." Hill, a second-round pick in 2000, came close to making the team out of spring training. Despite intense scrutiny on him as one of the Cubs top prospects, he hit .300 with four homers and 10 RBI. But he hadn't even played two full seasons of professional baseball, so the Cubs sent him to Iowa to get a little more experience. He caught a flulike virus at the end of spring training, losing 8 pounds and much of his strength. He missed the first few days of the season and hit just .161 in his first 17 games. Once he was healthy, he went on a tear. He hit .396 in his last 12 games in Iowa, scoring 12 runs. Veteran Cubs second baseman Delino DeShields, meanwhile, is hitting .194. "It's not one of those trial things," Cubs manager Don Baylor said of Hill's promotion. "He still probably has to learn how to handle things at this level. He's really come a long ways in the last two to three weeks as far as his batting average." Converted from shortstop to second base during 2001 spring training, Hill's defense has come a long way, too. He didn't commit any errors in Triple-A, and was in on 17 double plays.

Anything's better than Stynes / Bellhorn / DeShields....(though I like Bellhorn as a backup.)

Perhaps they can teach one of those guys to catch?

Hill will be fine. I think he and CP will be good table setters.

If he had signed with the Sox, he probably would have been in the big leagues at least a year earlier. Both sides came out losers in that deal. Same with Jeff Weaver. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I think he'll struggle initially, and I wonder how long Baylor will stick with him.

Course, I also wonder how long the Cubs will stick with Baylor.

Baylor had better stick with him, but there's no question who'll be in Chicago for a longer tenure....

The Patterson-Hill 1-2 combo was 0-10 tonight.

Most of the "experts" feel that Hill will be a solid player - but, never a star. Just throwing it out there in case anyone is expecting him to be a savior.

One game does not a season, or career make...besides, all the more reason to excuse Baylor.

Compared to EY, Stynes, and Delino, Hill will soon be at least to the John the Baptist level!

I think Hill will do OK. I don't think he will be a superstar but he is a big upgrade over the stiffs the Cubs were playing.

Default Moron!

Could someone tell me why you would bat Hill second behind Patterson? Yes, I know Patterson has had some success in the leadoff spot, but it discounts which has better power potential. Hill more clearly fits the "leadoff prototype" so I guessed Baylor would follow book and lead him off. If he says Hill isn't ready to lead off, then he's clearly not a 2 place guy and would be better off lower in the order.

I'm glad to see Hill up. DeShields and Baylor need to be put on the next flight out.

Default Lineup

My lineup, once named manager of the Cubs ...... (wake up Will!)
.... would be ...

Hill 4
Patterson 8 --- speed, bat control
Sosa 9
McGriff 3
Alou 7 --- RLR or I'd have Alou fourth if healthy
Gonzalez 6 - bc he's looked so good
Mueller 5
Machado 2 - bc he's cheap and maybe could hit. We know the other two cant.

I think Mueller's skills are better suited for #2 than that low.

A good sign that your offense is in trouble is if you think bringing up a rookie is going to make it a lot better.
